Up for grabs is an Atari 5200 Decathlon Cart. You must tell me the historic facts behind the picture, explain who's story this avatar tells and explain why I chose to abandon my animated Galaga avatar in favor of this avatar. Entries must be submitted before 12:00 AM EST December 1, 2003 to qualify. If no one has adequately answered the questions above by this date, I will reset the contest and continue to accept new answers. Only the first response from each person will qualify unless I reset the contest, so choose your responses carefuly. Edited responses will automatically be disqualified. Hint: This contest is not as cut and dry as it may at first seem. Brad2600 Posted November 10, 2003 Share Posted November 10, 2003 It's a photo from the Salem Witch hunt. The two people being hanged are people suspected of being witches. They could not prove otherwise and thus, they were led to be hanged. I would guess that the guy being hanged was attempting to protect the girl from prosecution and in the process, is being hanged himself. The time period would be around May to October of 1692. The place would have to be Salem, Massachusetts. She was accused of Witchcraft more times then anyone else in Salem, Massachusetts. She was picked on not so much for being a witch but because she was a punk. She dressed the way she wanted, got drunk in the taverns, had parties late into the night and sees to have invented lingerie. I'm guessing you picked her because she is the very first punk? Perhaps you chose this avatar because you have an acquaintance who is/was caught in an INS/Homeland Security dragnet, and you think the acquaintance's situation draws some parallels with the story of Bridget Bishop. bjk7382 Posted November 19, 2003 Share Posted November 19, 2003 Okay, I guess I will try to put an end to this contest. First off, the historical facts: June 10, 1692 hanging of Bridget Bishop. This is significant because she was the first woman to be accused and convicted of being a witch. She was born in England in 1640, and when she was 20, she married George Wasselbe. They then moved to Salem, but 6 years later she was a widow. She then married again, this time to a man named Thomas Oliver. They had a daughter named Christian. They had a bad marrige and fought in public. It was a puritan communtiy so they got taken to the county courts and punnished for their actions. Oliver ended up dying too, and the town accused her of being a witch and she was found not guilty. She then married Edward Bishop, and that marrige was no better than her previous two. She ended up starting a bar in her house and things came to a climax and she was convicted of being a witch. Many of the townspeople testified at her trial that she appeared in their dreams and the whole town thought she should be hanged. They convicted her of being a witch and the whole town showed up for her hanging. Part 2 "explain who's story this avatar tells" : This is the hanging of Bridget Bishop. It happened June, 10 1692 Part 3 "explain why I chose to abandon my animated Galaga avatar" : This one is going to be hard, I think it was because she was a rebel and lived how she wanted to live. She was a "punk", I guess, as other people have said in here, and she had her own tavern in her house. That alone is enough to choose her as your avatar. On the other hand maybe you just got sick of galaga. I guess the last part is up to your own interpretation.
