SPACE FORTRESS OMEGA

Sort of winning the poll see the comments and with Carlsson rightly pointing out we had played Gyruss not too long ago; will be in another poll before this season is done... it's Space Fortress Omega for it's 2nd HSC outing!

Play Version 1.1

SFO is a steady vertical scroller with the mission of collecting the missiles and repairing (shooting) the power generators (shown on screenshots above)... much more info in the manual which has some fantastic artwork by @RedThunder  Looking forward to playing this again and seeing if we can get past the first few levels, basically the mission remains the same but the aliens get more agressive and the obstructions are reinforced. The screen flashes green when you have completed your targets , it is possible to complete a level without this but you will rank lower ;)

Instructions: Space Fortress Omega Manual v1.1a.pdf

Bootable ATR: Space Fortress Omega v1.1.ATR

Video: play-through of SFO level 1

Settings Play on Trainee to get the hang of things, or Pilot if you wish. McKong, rdrunner myself and any other lurking former champions play on Pilot.

Scoring Similar to Star Raiders and Blue Max we'll play for ranking and class (if you can read it) then score, so post all three please.

Rounds Ends Saturday 30th November 12pm UK time

Help if you haven't a clue how to play or have any problems just post :-o

Feedback still welcone on my game, not touched the assembler cart in a long time but never say never ;) I had it in my head that on trainee I had some easier blocks (wider gaps) on the final tight stage but I'm not sure if that happened or was a to happen :!:

#1 Rule: Have Fun

:!:

had my first go since last time we played here in the HSC, atmospheric and intimidating, kinda liked it... got all the targets and reached the final stage but failed to get through the final tight turn or so; need to keep it steady and use the diagonals a bit!

11,420 Space Traveller Class 1

Space Fortress Omega: 9,340 (Space Cruiser, Class 1)

Enjoying this one! Now I need to read the instructions to see if I'm missing anything. 😁

EDIT: I didn't change the difficulty settings when I started - does it default to Pilot?

EDIT 2: The manual is helpful! Your ship has an "emergency battery" that will refill your energy once per life. Hit Option to activate it.

you're missing RT's superb artwork ;)

I forgot about the emergency battery - thanks I should read my own instructions :!:

I didn't run out of energy but it gets low near the end of level if you repeatedly crash like I did, there is the very tricky middle section with narrow generators if you are really desperate

Defaults to Pilot.

The aliens don't bother you at all on the first level but they get more interested and armed up on subsequent levels ;)

Thanks for playing :)

2xxx pts - rank Grud in Space class 1.

The font is super hard to read. You might as well have gone with a visual representation of Braille for the numbers, it had been just as easy to tell the difference, but as we're playing for rank and class, it doesn't really matter if you think it says 2000 pts or 8000 pts.

No RAM left so was a decision/compromise, you can see it on my CRT :!:

The score and high score are shown again on the scroller on the title screen ;)

31,180 Star Cadet Class 1

Made it past level 1, much easier journey through the last section this time, level 2 holy sh*t :-o somehow completed that and got about half way through level 3. Forgot about some of their advanced weaponry :!: Nerve wracking but fun. there are only 10 levels so I guess it can be completed somehow ;) tap tap tap HSCers...

Having a go each day or so as I do for most HSC offerings. Lots of level 2 goes but made it again to level 3 with a similar score

32,080 Star Cadet Class 1 again... not really played SFO in anger before so will be interesting, easy to get distracted by all the features. Level 3 the fortress starts to become more menacing as there are more restrictions :!:

New poll on soon ;)

Another level 3 go 29.120.

Top Tip = line up for the tighter spots with your two streams of bullets if they are central your ship will pass through some places where you do not expect it to ;)

Round 18 POLL is OPEN - And the big question is will it be Gyruss :?: :!: :)

We were supposed to play a competition game but it turned out to be weak, even terrible. it ended as always. Mario rocks.

Are you saying that you played Space Fortress Omega and didnt like it, and didnt want to contribute a score?

Nice photo @Caco

SFO (even on Trainee) is on the challenging side of games, I programmed something I would like to play and I'm happy to report I'm really enjoying it!!

Reached level 4 - 41,790 still a Star Cadet Class 1 hmmm I was hoping for another ranking - completed the targets on levels 1 and 2 but not on 3, on level 4 it's getting boxed in more... photos later ;)

Round 18 POLL is OPEN -

33800 (Level 3), Star Cadet Class 1

Very challenging game.  I kept losing my patience with it.  I keep wanting to fly faster, but that always killed me.  Especially on Level 3, there are lots of traps that will just spring on you unless you're constantly braking.

Also noticed that sometimes your shots fail to kill an enemy or target, no matter how long you shoot at it.  Not sure if this was "intentional" like in Tail of Beta Lyrae?

Not much time available this round.   Tough game but could see giving more time to get better.   20241114_235202.thumb.jpg.465d7408d68dda7bcdf4eb26ac39b5c5.jpg

Yes needs a few goes, over time you "learn" the layout and where is likely to have missiles etc

Yes going fast is ok on the open sections but otherwise need to tkink ahead and loiter!  There were levels of toughness for each type, I think all of the aliens can be destroyed but threre were some top guys  - you will have noticed they change colour / go brighter as they are shot. I think the weapons cab also be destroyed but they are probavbly and intentionally set to be difficult so best avoided. You can also shoot the power ups :!: [the "P" power ups will help with their destruction (they are cumulative) and the shiled works Vanguard style so you can crash into them to destroy them.]

Take a look at ACE still level - i forgot I had programmed switchable firing and homing missiles (hold it down to toggle) !

Still a few days to go on this round, votes please everyone ;)
