Opinions on the Jeff Minter Llamasoft Collection?

Recommended Posts

It's for fans only. If you want to see interviews with Jeff Minter and play a large chunk of his games (including some really crummy games on some really crummy formats... the ZX81? Really?), go ahead and get it, but if you need justification beyond playing that Konix Multisystem prototype which is an overly busy version of Empire Strikes Back on the Atari 2600, pass.

Personally, I've been a Minter fan since the 1990s thanks to his work on the VIC-20, and felt obliged to purchase this collection. It's telling that I haven't gone back to it in over a month, though.

Yeah, it seems that these Gold Series titles are more about the documentaries than the games themselves.  I thought I would want to play more of these 8-bit titles like I used to but I'm currently distracted by so many other games in my collection.  Plus I really want to play more Llamatron but with those sounds, I just can't...

I still want to get Making of Karateka & Tetris Forever but will wait for the Steam sales instead.

I know this has been out for a while, just curious to see some opinions and if the collection is worth the price.

I honestly thought I would get more out of this collection than what I did.  While I am a fan of Minter and what he is all about, I have to admit there aren't too many games I feel like revisiting (time and time again) in this collection than say what is in Atari 50.  Still, I would say if/when there is a very good deal on it then it might be worth checking out.  Just my opinion.

It's a very poor "collection" really, eg. it's missing all of his Amiga games.

Yeah, when I was looking at the game list, I didn't see any of his Amiga titles. The overall game line up seems pretty lack luster in general aside from a few games. I'll probably just skip this collection.

Thanks for the feedback ya'll.

I do enjoy a lot of Minter's titles, I'm just not sure if I'm willing to drop $30 for this collection.

If you like difficult games and don't mind the collection being centered around his golden age/8-bit output, you're gonna enjoy it. Also, not a lot of new stuff about the man for those who are his longtime followers and use to keep their llama news up to date.

You get the Atari Nas-T versions instead, which I agree kind of sucks. I'm not a fan of this computer at all; it feels like a "me too" version of the Amiga with a crappier sound processor.

The Amiga has its strengths, but the ST has its strengths also.  Looking at Llamatron, there are many small sprites.  The Amiga's strength is with larger sprites, but ST performs better with small sprites than the Amiga: 1. the Amiga blitter has to be set up by the 68000 (the ST 68000 immediately starts the copy), 2. the Amiga display processor slows down the 68000, 3.  the Amiga runs at a slower speed even before the screen display kicks in.  Add in the fact that the RAM in the ST/Amiga runs at 1/4th speed of the 68000;  neither the Amiga (nor STe) blitters can perform copies at 7.16/8.0 Mhz, but 1.79/2.0 Mhz.

The ST versions of many of Jeff Minter's games are likely the better versions.

(Aside:  I am not a "fan" of either of these computers, or any for that manner; I do respect the efforts by both CBM and Atari to offer alternatives to the 8088/CGA computers that dominated the mid 80's.  I do enjoy both the Amiga and the ST).

I played a PC port of Llamatron on my work desktop downloaded off the brand-new World Wide Web in 1995 - company had no policy about playing games on the job, but after me they did 😅

Needless to say the version included in this collection is superior - I also really enjoy Hovver Bovver 😁👍

I remember playing the PC version of Revenge of the Mutant Camels once, the camel sounded like a friggin' horse... :?

The PC port of Llamatron I also recall used ripped sfx from Robotron so I was ok with that I suppose.
