I am guessing nobody has expansive experience with this game, but fingers crossed.

After every battle you can leave guards at your conquered castles to keep them from being retaken by the enemy. I am confused about a couple of points regarding this and I have not been able to find answers anywhere. If anybody has experience with this game chime in here so I can ask some questions.

Yeah, that was my #1 favorite game on Sega CD (still is, I guess, even though it's been a while)  But I probably won't be much help answering questions - I finished all playthroughs back in 94/95, and revisited a few years later, but haven't played it in over 2 decades.

Well one of the things I was wondering about was how many guards you should leave.  I actually found an answer to that, one walkthrough or something said three units is enough.  I have done three each time, and I have repelled the Demon Army's attack every time.  That leads me into my next question, does the level of the units matter?  Is leaving one high level unit the same as one low level unit with regards to guarding castles?  I guess I could play around with this, but I do not wan to see what happens if I leave two high level units and they are unable to repel an attack.  I am assuming I will then have to fight through that map again, and I do not want to have to backtrack.

One question I have had regards the number of castles you can leave guards at.  The manual says you can only leave guards at three castles, which made me wonder how I would not lose all the rest of my castles each battle.  I think what the game does is leave the farther rearward castles protected by the ones on the enemy lines.  At least that is what I think is happening.

So far I have finished five or six maps and I think I am really starting to get the hang of it.  I did get my rear end handed to me twice trying to defeat the Fire Spirit.  I kind of cheated for the Air Spirit, and just looked up how strong I would need to be to defeat the Air Spirit, and none of my magic users are there yet.  I figured out how to get the air spirit on my own, but I did not want to waste time if I was guaranteed to lose.  I also got the Shinobi Knife, so eventually I will be able to get a Ninja.
