2003 Hack List

StanJr

Recommended Posts

This is my vain attempt at compiling a complete list of Hacks released between Jan 1 2003 and Dec. 15 2003 (selfishly for the purpose my Stan Awards, but also to help Albert updating the Hacks page).

All Hacks listed below are considered finished or complete and have been released publically either in ROM or cart form. If you note that I have missed a hack, PLEASE post the hack and a link to its ROM so that I may add it to my list (and as a consequence it will be entered into the running for the Hack of the Year award!)

Thanks for the help!

Stan

I think you missed my favorite hack this year: Drag Race

Thanks! Based on the lack of replies to my original post about Drag Race, I didn't think anyone was playing it. Glad you like it.

Stan, you missed a few more.

Spitfire Attack RC (Dennis Debro did this one for me, the flight controls are reversed):

Pitfall Trainer (I did this one, it gives you unlimited lives and time):

You're right a lot of people missed it when you originally posted it (sometimes there's too many hacks, not a bad thing though :) ) but since we got some hot playing tips about Dragster the last few months, I did a search and found your cool hack. I prefer it to the original and I'm sure a few others have tried it out after I posted a screenshot:

Stan,

I just remembered another cool hack that I didn't see on your list, Air Raiders with unlimited ammo, and another one with a full ammo refill upon landing. After searching the forums for the original post, I found that you created it! ;)

I did a little more searching, and found a hack that I did back in April. It's of Indy 500, the tracks have all been changed. It doesn't have a name though....hmm... how about "Indy 500 Plus" :D ;)

@Stan Jr: I guess it is at this point; I haven't been able to figure out the last few things I wanted to. The problem is, to implement any of the other changes (turning the screen invisible, making the fruit turn the monsters blue, etc.) I believe requires adding code to an 8K cart. Not an easy task from what I hear :( I really wanted to see this come to life, too...

@Atarius Maximus: You always have such cool hacks!

Necessity is the mother of invention ;)

The best way to make that happen is to disassemble and reverse-engineer the source to the point that you can locate the routines that handle energizers and fruits. By reducing the 4-screen game to one, that should leave enough rom space to add small routines in. The main problem is that you have no ram left...which might be the only way to keep track of the "random" things that happen in the game (like the disappearing maze or monsters that don't change). The points for eaten monsters is easily solved (change the table of the values 200-400-800-1600 to 200-400-800-1600-3200...when a fruit is eaten flag the routine for the energizer and bump up the index counter). But the random things would be pretty tricky to pull off using the existing routines.

Thanks StanJr, Breakpack, and Nukey Shay :) I will refer to this thread if/when I can get back to fiddling with it...

I think what would help (me) a great deal is that emulator / disassembler someone started writing a while back, that would show the screen on the left, and the code on the right. (Funny enough I remember seeing Ms.Pac-Man in the example). I am assuming at this point (being it wasn't released yet), that you could step through the code? Or at least put break points in it?

I wish I could remember the name of that application, and I hope it gets released soon :) ... I'll do a search when nobody's in my office...

You forgot ACE ..

Forthcoming Hacks:

IndySprint (Sprintmaster with Indy 500 cars)  (Rob Mitchell)

PDP Spacewar (2600 Spacewar with improved Newtonian Physics and black space).  (Thomas Jentzsch and Rob Mitchell)

Rob Mitchell, Atlanta, GA

ACE is what, and where can I find it?

"forthcoming," eh?
