AtariKing
here's my idea of a Homebrew game. Since I can't program, I hope someone will. Bullet Chase? CX-26201 (Homebrew Game?) © 2004 Jonathan Watson 1. STORY The great peaceful planet of Kourzin is under attack by the evil planet of Hawklon! They have invaded the city of Sharzo which is nothing more than a series of difficult mazes! You have been selected to defeat the enemies of Kourzin! The President of Kourzin had said to you, "Our fate is in your hands young one!" So now get in your tank and defeat thy enemy! 2. GAMEPLAY NOTE: Bullet Chase is for One or Two Players. Joy Sticks are required! The objective of Bullet Chase? is to manuver yourself around the maze eating bullets. be careful, the red tanks can fire lasers at you and damage you! If you are hit five times you will die! So make sure you avoid the lasers. In the maze there is Power Cells! There's only four in each maze so use them wisely! Once used, you'll be able to destroy your enemy by touching them! be careful and move quick! Your special power won't last long! Once each maze is cleared, you'll move to the next maze! Good luck! 3. USING THE CONTROLLERS Use your Joystick Controller with this ATARI Game Program cartridge. Be sure to plug the controller cables firmly into the jacks at the back of your Video Computer System game. Hold the controller with the red fire button to your upper left toward the television screen. Use the LEFT CONTROLLER jack for this one-player game. And use the RIGHT CONTROLLER jack for the two player game. See Section 3 of your owner's manual for further details. Use the Joystick Controller to: - Move through the maze and collect bullets! - Avoid the red tanks until Power Cell has been used! - Once Power Cell is used, destroy thy enemy! When manuering in the maze, move your blue tank to go any direction that you disire by eating bullets and storing them up for later! When you are ready, to destroy your enemy, go to one of the Power Cells and touch it. It will supercharge your tank making you able to either touch your enemy to destroy him or to damage him until he is gone. Press the red button to fire your at your enemy once you have touched a Power Cell! Your fire power won't last long and you can't fire forever since your ammo is limited! 4. CONSOLE CONTROLS GAME SELECT SWITCH GAME RESET SWITCH Press down either the GAME SELECT or RESET switch to start the game. Pressing either the GAME SELECT or RESET switch during the game has no effect. DIFFICULTY SWITCHES When the LEFT DIFFICULTY switch is set to B a square will appear at the edge of the screen indicating the direction the Skeleton is in. The square will be near the top of the screen when the Skeleton is ahead of you and near the bottom of the screen when the Skeleton is behind you. The RIGHT DIFFICULTY switch is not used in this game. TV TYPE SWITCH The TV TYPE switch is not used in this game. 5. LEGAL STUFF This Manual is copyright 2004 by Jonathan Watson in hopes someone will take this idea into a Atari 2600 Game for fans. If you use this manual to program this game, please notify me that you are making this game! If you make this game, I want a cart and insturctions for making creating the plot of this game. If you made a box too, I request a box too. Please e-mail me to get my address if you are making this game of mine. E-mail me at: EchoHeart9@HotPOP.com. Thanks! This Game is Atari Cart Code: CX-26201. This game is meant for the Atari 2600 VCS System. © 2004 Jonathan Watson. All rights Reserved. NovaXpress
I used to make my own fantasy video game manuals when I was 11 years old as well.
Nateo
You know, sometimes I think we should just open up an ideas thread, or even a forum just for throwing different game ideas around and reflect on them. Maybe through different ideas, we will get a better understanding about how the 2600 (and other systems) work, and we can understand better what the programmers have to go through. I see what you're going for, but honestly if someone wants to understand 2600 programming they need to just start doing it. A non-programmer will never understand what a programmer goes through. Even someone like me who knows one or two programming languages can't fathom what these 2600 guys are doing. I could learn for myself over a long period of time, but Im more than happy with the homebrew output as it is.

vb_master
This sounds like a hack of Room of Doom
AtariKing
Well, I am not a programmer... I don't know how to program 2600 Carts, or for that matter wouldn't be able to encode my game... too advanced... if one of those Homebrew Programmers would, that be great! Thomas Jentzsch
Well, I am not a programmer... I don't know how to program 2600 Carts, or for that matter wouldn't be able to encode my game... too advanced... if one of those Homebrew Programmers would, that be great! If you search the forums, you will find lots of posts like yours. None of those have been realized yet (or probably ever will be). There is only one exception, called "Fade Out" where the game designer invested quite a lot of time into understanding the limitations of the 2600. Here are some links for that game, which is currently programmed: http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33473 http://www.atariage.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=33370 So, though he doesn't know how to program, he managed to present an (almost) working concept including mockups. That's the way to go!
EricBall
I agree with Thomas, any 2600 game idea has to take the limitations of the TIA into account. Although programmers have managed to do more with the 2600 than the designers dreamed, there are still things the 2600 cannot do. (Or would require a very complex cartridge with additional RAM, ROM and logic.) And as the old saying goes "10% inspiration, 90% perspiration".
