MAME Discoveries...

Have ye any favorite games in MAME that you've never seen before, in the arcade or otherwise that you find entertaining?

For me, I'm hoplessly addicted to the game Chicken Shift . The way it works is that you have two buttons, a red and a blue one. Eggs roll down a chute towards a egg carton. Every so often there is a pipe whose direction you can 'shift' to allow the egg to pass through on its way to the carton. The object is to make sure no eggs crash to the floor.

It's a fun little puzzler. Check the link above for screenshots.

I haven't made too many discoveries in MAME because I never bother to download ROMs for games I'm not familiar with. But thanks to Midway Arcade Treasures on the GameCube I have discovered the mindless joys of Toobin', a game I had never heard of until mid-2003 when I was hunting through NES titles at a used game store, and at that point didn't even consider buying because it looked so stupid.

Goes to show, I should learn that I like stupid stuff.

I’m gonna cheat on this answer slightly and say Camel Try. It showed up in the RAINE emulator a half year or so earlier than it did in MAME but I had never heard of the game until I discovered it in an emulated form. It’s such a great game too. I’d love to have the opportunity to play it on a real machine someday and play it with a spinner. In fact, that game is the whole reason that I finally broke down and got a SNES after saying for years that I had absolutely no interest in one. The US SNES release name is “On The Ball”.

Rampart is one...I didn't even know about the game since it's been a while that we even had arcades around here.

And that split-screen Space Invaders clone whose name escapes me at the moment (2 player with bases at the top/bottom of the screen and invaders charging both).

Space Invaders 2. Midway's style.

@Nukey: I love Rampart!!!! You might want to check out the famicom version of Rampart as it is much different than the other various ports. While the basics are the same, the characters you use are very different. It's been a while, but I think there might be a quest mode in it as well. I sure wish one of the translation groups would pick up on this one! If you are at all interested, PM me... I'll hook you up with the ROM.

There are several games that I am hooked on in Mame that I never saw in the arcade: The Glob, Anteater, and Foodfight to name just a few.

I grew up sheltered. My mother thought that the dark smokey atmosphere of arcades were the devil's playground for child molesters and such. Incidentally, I really don't have many memories of the earlier titles, except for those that I caught a glimpse of on rare occasions when I sneaked in while she wasn't looking. Of those I remember, but never actually played, Dragon's Lair stands especially. The only early arcade games that I have a good memory of were usually found in well lit department stores - Shopko, K-mart and such. Thus, my favorite arcade games growing up were Megaforce (Starforce for others), and High-speed MsPacman, and Q*bert! :-)

That's another good one. It's reminiscent of the bonus levels in Sonic the Hedgehog 1

I'm Sorry

Psycho Soldier (although it doesn't work 100% correctly yet)

Jump Coaster (although I don't really know how to play it)

Speed Coin

Numan Athletics (another that doesn't work that great...but what does work is fun)

Journey (yes an arcade game based on the band)

Son Son

Timber

Strength & Skill

A few of my personal oddball favorites :)
