CGE 2004

Not trying to start an arguement, war or anything else with this post. Just wanted to comment on this years show.

I just learned that CGE 2004 will be held in San Jose, California this time and I'm disappointed. I had heard that quite possibly the location would be changed but hoped that it would remain in Vegas. Speaking just for myself, I liked the Vegas location as it provided plenty of things to do when not attending the show, cheap rooms, cheap air, and the show site was very nice. Plus the fact that I had family in Nevada gave me even more incentive to attend CGE as it was easy to fit in a trip to the show during our "vacation".

I know nothing of San Jose, never been there, and have nothing against it. But I know I won't be attending CGE this year and probably won't attend another one while its held at a California location. Not a protest or anything as I was really looking forward to attending my 2nd show. It just comes down to the fact that it is very hard to justify all the extra costs that I would incur for a two day show in California, when I could spend a similar amount of money (probably less) for a 7 day vacation in Nevada.

Best of luck to the organizers and I sincerely hope the show does very well. But since my time and money only allow for one show a year (maybe two if they were close by), I guess I'll start planning for Austin instead.

Has the change in location changed anyone elses plans on attending this year?

I think you are not alone Mendon. I think after this years event the organizers will realize that they screwed up in hosting this thing in San Jose. If you were going to put this thing in California L.A. would of made a much better choice. I think the C.G.E organizers might be the first people ever to use the excuse that because the show was getting to big that it needed to taken out of Vegas and moved to San Jose. I just think it personally sucks that the Southwest of the United States does not have one single Old School gaming convention

You could always go to AGE (Austin Gaming Expo), it's only 24 hours from Vegas ;) There's also OKGE (Oklahoma Gaming Expo).

This is one of the main reasons I'm not going this year. One of the main draws of CGE was the fact that it was in Vegas and it was a good excuse to go. I always had fun at CGE in the past, but the convention only goes until 7:00 or so. After that you were free to go out and explore Vegas and have a great time. I've never been to San Jose before, but I doubt it has all the fun things to do that Vegas does.

I haven't gone to a CGE but I would be more likely to go if it still was in Vegas. I can see why they moved it to San Jose, it's closer to many of the software and tech centers where all the classic gaming programmers reside. There was also talk that you could get more off-the-street traffic in the Silicon Valley area than in Vegas. But those two advantages I think are outweighed by the conveinence and fun of Vegas. But the proof will be how the show does the next couple of years, might be a brilliant move :)

Vegas had three things I absolutely loved when I went to CGE:

* Cheap airplane tickets

* Cheap food all over town

* Cheap games at the show

If you want to add a fourth one, cheap hotel prices.

Actually if you want to add a fifth one, cheap BEER. :D

But honestly, how can San Jose possibly compare in any of the first three categories except one?

Well, I know the cost of living here compared to east and west coast makes MGC comparable to the first 4 points. And being it's in Milwaukee, we definitely have the cheap BEER point in the bag. ;)

Well, I went to San Jose State... and that was before the valley went bust. Being a poor college student, I didn't go bar hopping a ton... it was always cheaper to stay home and play games, or get drunk with other band geeks. :D

I know the city has done a lot to try and revitalize downtown. The times I've gone home to visit, I never had the desire to visit SJSU (campus is downtown) or the surrounding areas. Probably the only reason I'd want to return to the area would be to hit up Dave & Buster's at the Great Mall (about 10-15 minutes from downtown, depending on traffic) and head up to Cupertino to visit a certain maker of computers and software. ;) From what I recall, parking in downtown SJ isn't the best, and there's always some sort of construction going on. At least that was the case 7-8 years ago.

You can drive up to San Francisco, or down to Santa Cruz, but the fact is that there is more fun per square mile to be had in Las Vegas. South Bay residents, please don't flame; I'm just recalling the way things were when I went to school, and when I lived there while commuting to work in Monterey. I hope the city has worked hard to attract new businesses and improve its image. From what I've read in the Mercury News, it doesn't sound like things have changed too drastically.

But, we were also hoping CGE would be in Vegas, since the Mr. hasn't been there yet. Given the number of cool people in Austin, I guess I'll have to ask him if he wants to try that convention. The fact my mom doesn't live in the East Bay any more (free room and board!) kind of kills the fun of going home. She left a view of the Bay for ... Iowa. :(

Nothing wrong with Iowa.  If I was still living there, I'd probably try to host a gaming con in Des Moines. :D

She's in Walcott. My biggest problem with it is losing the condo on the 28th floor with the fabulous view for ...

a farm house with two goats? :?

Now we need someone in the family to move to Illinois, then we'd have all of the "I" states covered (bigferret's family is in Indiana).

And yeah, gas prices would limit the exploring of S.F. or Santa Cruz. Maybe they'll be $3/gallon by the time CGE rolls around. :o

cant you take a train from SJ to SF?

the one time i was out there, i had a blast, but driving sucked. everywhere we went there was a traffic jam. The Apple campus was pretty cool, though you could only go into the lobby and the store, but i saw my first G4 cube there (this was just after it was announced) :)

Me like show in SJ.

It is much easier for me to attend from Seattle. I also like the change in venue. Vegas is too damn HOT and I cannot stand the smoke filled casinos. Yes, the shows were nice, but I cannot stomach the area for very long (Might be that I am aclimitized to a wetter and colder environment here in Washington state  ). SJ is much closer to the heart of where it all started. They may be able to draw more alumni. For example, Joe Decuir wasn't going to attend CGE in Vegas this year, but told me he will probably attend the show in SJ.

Heheheh.... try Florida, Lee. A lot like Vegas but only add in 95% humidity and you'll change clothes every 30min. The Disney - Universal TV commercials always show happy, smiling, DRY people enjoying Florida... come on down and see reality with them soaking wet (and not from the water rides) and swatting at Love Bugs... :D

Speaking of "smoke filled casinos", here in Florida smoking is banned in resturants and I'm used to it. Every time we went into a resturant in Nevada I had culture shock as they either said "How many in your party? Smoking or non-smoking? or just seated us without asking and an ash tray is on every table because the entire resturant was smoking allowed.

But I hear what you are saying. Some people will like the change, others won't; to each their own. Though I won't be going I still hope its successful just for the community.

Well, since you brought it up :) I am going to Florida on bussiness next week. Yes, it is humid, but it hasn't been too bad in the few times I've been down there. I've always had a good experience. Fl is a nice place to visit. I love the beaches and the ocean there. Laying out on a sunny ocean beach in WA is a rare thing for me.

Had CGE been in Vegas this year, I definitely would have attended. I'm going out to Vegas for two weeks around the time of the show to see some relatives. Vegas has a lot to do and would have been a better choice. When they see a much smaller turnout, I'm hoping they decide to move the show back to Vegas.

I think they're hoping to get runover from the con that will be going on across the street that same weekend. I've been to San Jose before. It reminded me of Stamford, CT near where I live; in other words, the city itself was very forgettable. There's not a lot to do in San Jose, but that part of the state is beautiful and has a lot going on for it.

Since gas prices keep going up and I don't want to get jacked on the airline fuel surcharge or higher ticket prices, I'm starting to consider CGE 2004 now. I wanted to go to at least one more convention this year, but I need to book a flight and hotel far enough in advance to "get r done" as Larry the Cable Guy would say at a decent price. Since nothing else has been announced thus far, CGE may be my only choice - and since I had a good experience when I went a couple years ago I'd be willing to give San Jose a shot. Never been to Cali anyway, so there's a first time for everything. :D So far, only pondering it though. Haven't bought any tickets, plane, con or otherwise.

Just to let everyone know the show is shaping up fantastically!!!

Our exposure at E3 really went a long way to promoting our move to San Jose. We had dozens of new alumni approach us at E3 who were looking forward to joining us in SJ. And all other aspects of the show are growing as well. The museum in particular will be bigger than ever with some items that have never been seen before as well as some which haven't been seen since CGE 1999.

Just a reminder to all, the early-bird discount price was supposed to end this weekend but because of the holiday weekend and since we didn't post a reminder, we're extending the discount price for another week. The new deadline is Sunday June 6th at midnight.

Look forward to seeing everyone in San Jose!

John
