How much space does the bikini thread take up?  There are probably more posts in that thread than some of the forums here.

Ahh, yes, I forgot that is still there. I will delete that later tonight. :)

I'd be in favor of dumping the entire forum database (and all of the drama contained within) if it means a better BB system.  Important info can be reposted in time by those concerned (as seen following the Nexus changeover).

Any opposed?

I agree Nukey most of the threads in the forum are just taking up space for example,

for repeated questions most of those could be dumped, threads with constant spam in them and

threads that are way out of date like "well I have come across a problem in Qb" etc.. that is no longer relevant! ;)

I mean if you were to post letters to a magazine do you think they would keep all the mail?

obviously no! and its slowing down the server.

Word of advice Albert no sooner you will have tranfered everything to the new BB

when it will fill up and slow down quicker than you can say "Jack and Jill"

I say dump all of the threads that are no longer needed and clean the place up :D

Most of the old Announcements could go after the move as well! they are definatly not needed! 8)

I wonder how NE146 who has half his posts in bikini thread will react ;)

Actually you will find I have barely anything in the Bikini thread.. that thread was much too lame and tame for my tastes ;) I did try and shake it up a bit though with some 'jokes' if I remember correctly though

What about shear power? What systems are these forums being run on? I have some very powerfull computers. If you need speed, I have a server that might be up your guy's alley. downside is though I can't donate it, it cost too much but I'll sell it to you dirt cheap (relitivily speaking)

I have a intel SR870BN4 It has only two Itainium2 processors, but it can handle four! also it comes with 10GB SDRAM, and 500GB SCSI (hot-swap) hard disk space. down side it's a 4U server, and requires a rack. the processor speeds are only 1.3GHz but I garuntee you, it's one fast machine!

let me know. currently the system is managing some "special tasks" but in a few weeks or so I'll have no need for it.

I think this would be fixing the wrong problem. The main issue here is that phpBB is inefficient for handling large amounts of data... throwing processors at the problem will just postpone the slowdowns for a few more months. Moving to different, more efficient forum software is really the only suitable option in this case, and would theoretically solve things in the long-term as well.

I like the user interface of this software. I've been over at the MacWorld forums, their software sucks! the whole feel of it is different than my beloved AtariAge U.I. Throwing speed at a problem means that the software runs inefficiently FASTER! which would reduce the bogg downs! and then phpBB will have come out with better software that will run even better on the faster equipment!

Three Birds, One Stone:

- The problem with the bogged down system

- The problem of eventual hardware upgrading

- The problem with future system compatibility

Do you know how powerfull a Itainium2 processor is?

A lot of problems here are caused I suspect by the age of the phpBB core. The newer versions of phpBB have had the search engine I think entirely rewriten, or at least changed rather a lot, so these kind of issues should be able to be solved by *cough* simply *cough* upgrading to a newer version of phpBB, but the problem with that is all the hacks and changes to this board make it hard to do any kind of upgrade, and many of them would have to be adapted and repatched into the new phpBB core in order to maintain functionality... it wont be easy, but unless you're sure the new phpBB's have the same problems, I'd recomend that route instead of IPB, which I also must agree dosnt feel right. Not that phpBB is perfect hehe, but its nice, and we're all used to it :).

Then again, this isnt a democracy, so what I think dosnt really matter that much :).

If you're concerned about the board being completely different after changing the software; don't be. Albert mentioned before that when they change over, they'll use Invision Power Board. Out of curiousity, I went to Invision's web page to see what it was like. It turns out that they have a whole online demo forum that you can check out. In fact, it has a very similar interface to phpBB. As long as Albert sets all the colors and icons the same, you might not even notice the difference until you try to post a message.

I was wondering why I could not edit my posts. I often make mistakes and either omit words or place the wrong word in a post. I get distracted sometimes when I am posting so I liked the fact that I was able to edit.

I guess there are certain posts that can be deleted like old marketplace items that have been resolved between the buyer and the seller for example.

Invision isn't *that* much different than phpBB, seeing as how I'm pretty sure they were both forked from the same original project years ago. Its search interface is a little more cumbersome but possibly more powerful, and its index handling will certainly be better than the version of phpBB that's in use here.

That said, if phpbb's recent versions really are more efficient in the indexing/searching department, I can't imagine it'll be easier to migrate to Invision than make the same mods to phpBB that are in place now (will Invision's license even let you do that?)

But, I imagine it's way too late in the game (and the wrong topic) to argue that point.

There's still a "Preview" button sitting next to "Submit". It's always been much faster to read through a Preview rather than trying to edit a post. Believe me, if I didn't use Preview, editing those High Score Club posts would be a nightmare.

By the way, any ETA on when the new board software is going to show up?

There are many reasons we are going to switch to IPB besides the improvements in speed we'll see due to a better designed database and queries. There are many features built into IPB that are simply not available in phpBB or require you to modify the software to add them (then, making your installation non-standard and harder to upgrade). Also, development of IPB screams along compared with the slug-like pace of phpBB development. And finally, I really don't like the attitude of the developers in the phpBB forums, god forbid you are a newbie and ask an innocent question about the software. Nine times out of ten the welcome you receive is someone chastising you for not first using the search feature, which, amusingly, I have seen broken on the phpBB site from time to time (probably for the same reasons we have had problems here).

As soon as a stable 2.0 version is released and they update their phpBB -> IPB conversion software (which will then require additional work on my part to move all the attachments over, since attachments are not a standard feature in phpBB 2.x).

I just read the latest development update (posted today) and they are shooting for mid-June for the first Release Candidate (RC1).
