New version of MESS released

Recommended Posts

MESS 0.56 was released today!

It now supports some new 7800 games. Impossible Mission, Tower Toppler, Summer Games and Winter Games. I have updated the emulation page on my site with the updated ROM's. I'm sure that AtariAge will be updating theirs shortly.

I noticed that Summer/Winter Games do odd things sometimes, like kicking you back to the menu screen after an event. I'm wondering if this is because they use 16k instead of 8k like the other 7800 carts that use RAM. Dan B do you know?

Thanks for the tip, Mitch! Now I need to fire it up and take some screenshots for those games (finally!) I was beginning to wonder if they'd ever release a new version. I looked at the release notes and they didn't even mention any Atari 7800 changes!

So what other 7800 games aren't properly emulated? All the Absolute titles? Any others?

Yeeeeha!

Being the maintainer of the Epyx Shrine, this info is to me like a second X-Mas!

Finally! Thanks for the note Mich!

The bug fix that enabled those games to work was very minor and submitted months ago, so that's why it probably didn't make the list of changes.

Yeah, the Absolutes still don't work not sure why. Also Double Dragon and I belive Rampage don't work because of thier strange bankswitching that I still need to implement. Last time I check Tower Toppler ran, but the graphics where incorrect.

Dan

Actually Dan...Tower Toppler is hit and miss..

sometimes you load it up...and start playing the game..and they look fine...except that they look like an old PC type CGA graphics mode...very odd. But it is easy to see what it going on...then sometimes during game play the graphics will go screwy. Best way to describe it...is that the graphics form what looks like ASCI characters instead of the blocks to form the tower...but the character sprites seem fine.

Here are some shots to show what I mean:

Good:

Bad:

So I hope that gives a better example of what it looks like.

BTW Dan...Thanks for the awesome work on the 7800 driver for MESS even if they neglet to mention it in their updates, just know that the rest of us here do appreciate it!

Okay..so while some games work...others that were before are now broken. For instance I can't get Commando, Dark Chambers, Cracked, Kungfu Master, Mean 18, Midnight Mutants, Motopsycho, and too many others...they all do the same thing..

That is..they lock up just after the fuji logo during the encyrption check. So is there a problem with the Roms...or are this many games broken now in this new release? Because Winter, Summer Game, Tower Toppler, and Impossible Mission all work...

Just curious..

Yeah, I noticed that as well. Hang on to your old copy of MESS.

I'm guessing that the reason some of the games no longer work is because of the big jump in version numbers (new engine?).

Al, as far as the Absolute games go. All of them were more or less working in the previous version of MESS, though a couple are broken now. You may have been thinking of Activision, of which neither game works yet.

That's great, Dan! I just hope the next version of MESS is released more quickly than the previous one. Any word on how long we might have to wait?

Thanks,
