bcprs1
I was going through my 7800 collection and noticed that one of my Donkey Kong Jr has both the top and end labels put on upside-down. Is this rare? I havent seen too many label placement mistakes in Atari games.
+Mitch
I don't know how rare they are but I have one like that for Mario Bros. I pulled it out of a shrinkwrapped box, too. Mitch http://atari7800.atari.org
Gunstar
Remember, the people that put those labels on years ago probably got little more than minimum wage for their work, we're lucky they ALL aren't on upside down or crooked or something. They were probably on drugs too, as drug screening was uncommon back then when hiring people. Actually, they were probably workers in Malaysia or Singapore or somewhere, making the equivalent of a buck a week U.S. and illiterate in their own language let alone English. Tempest
The labels had to be put on by machine. There's no way you'd get more than 65% of them straight by hand. Besides, I've seen cutting errors and other things that can only be explained by machine error. Tempest
bcprs1
I kinda figured it was something like that. Thanks for the info.

Fretwobbler
Posted by Tempest - quoteThe labels had to be put on by machine. There's no way you'd get more than 65% of them straight by hand. Absolutely - the volumes in production wouldn't allow for any other method. It's a human however who loads all the stickers in a machine and the error will ocurr when they are not loaded in the correct orientation - ever got frustrated with your laserjet 5si trying to print on letter headed paper? I would presume the rarity would be detirmined by - 1 - the frequency of the machine operators error 2 - the time taken for the machine operative to notice the error This is a mistake that happens frequently in loads of industries - usually though the faulty product would be discarded but with a videogame cartridge being of a relatively high value for its size its likely they thought 'bollocks to it, send 'em out anyway'. Thats my theory for what its worth. Adam
Albert
Although I don't think I have any in my collection, I wouldn't go out of my way to collect labels that were attached upside down. I guess I would probably hang onto any I encountered, but I certainly wouldn't bid on one on eBay, unless perhaps it was of an extremely rare game (like, uhmm, Air Raid). Maybe I should (carefully) peel off some labels and reattach them upside down and pawn 'em off on eBay. Hmmm, actually, I better not give anyone any ideas. On a related note, I bet that the Atari 5200 CBS Electronics labels were attached backwards. If you look at these CBS labels, you can see that the name is printed twice. Once in small(er) print at the top, and then again in a larger typeface in the middle of the cart. The end label has "CBS Electronics" in orange. Now, if you were to reverse the label, CBS Electronics would be on the bottom (of the label) and the game title would be on the end. I find it hard to believe that this isn't how the label designer intended them to be attached. I also wouldn't doubt that perhaps once the first run of carts was run with the label incorrectly attached that they just decided to do them all that way to be consistent. But who knows. ..Al
bcprs1
I can see the ebay auction header already- "Extremely Rare Reversed Label Atari 7800 game" You are bidder on an extremely rare Atari 7800 Donkey Kong cart. The label was put on backwards. Don't pass up this RARE find. You will never see another one like this. My reserve for this auction is $500, but this is well worth it. SERIOUS BIDDERS ONLY!!!! I like that, by saying "The label was put on backwards", I could reverse labels myself and technically be telling the truth. ..Al
