+Nathan Strum
I think some music would be nice during the actual gameplay. Also, does anyone know if he intended for there to be points awarded for collecting fruit? From what I can tell the score counter doesn't indicate an increase other than the one based on time. The score is based on the number of platforms you pass. The fruit increases the value of each platform. The more fruit you have, the more points you earn. Lonely Mountain Hermit
Thanks...that seems like a pretty unique method for keeping score. Man, I really hope this game is eventually released.
Carpenter
Just found MGD. Wow what addiction :-) Even not 100% complete it is fantastic playable. I Hope Alex can finish it!
sandmountainslim
Just found MGD. Wow what addiction :-) Even not 100% complete it is fantastic playable. I Hope Alex can finish it! If finally got to PLAY MGD after reading about it since the beginning. It is a GREAT game and had the potential to be on of the great homebrew releases, too bad the author's health took a turn for the worse and it remains unfinished. Has anyone heard from Alex in the past year or so? Do we know if he is still with us? Wp
AtariLeaf
I too just discovered this great game. Wow, I hope it makes cart form. Excellent game. What is wrong with the author exactly?

Godzilla
Yea, this game is awesome. It's "inspiration" (Spike Goes Down,) Hidden only on the limited edition of Protector (which, I was lucky enough to get back when first offered,) is one of my favorite video games of all time and may be my favorite Vectrex game (depending on the day, ) I really do hope he is ok. http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?showuser=2511 hasn't been on since 2007... april fools day of 2006, he had this to say (I think it was in this thread,) "Hi Folks, it's about time I posted an update. Unfortunately I haven't made much progress with MGD over the past year or so. I've had some heath problems to contend with (including a brain haemorrhage - ouch!!!), and it's hard to get back into a project when it's been left so long." also, this, Posted by: Thomas Jentzsch Sun Jan 14, 2007 9:13 AM thegoldenband @ Sun Jan 14, 2007 2:34 AM: Would love an update, whether on the game, or just on Alex's health. I have exchanged some emails with Alex lateley. and when asked "and? how is he? what did he say about releasing the game? I played it via the CC1 it is an amazing game" and "I am curious as well. I tried contacting him a few months ago, but to no avail. I hope he is doing well! ..Al" all we got was a cryptic "Posted by: Thomas Jentzsch Thu Aug 2, 2007 7:48 AM PressureCooker2600 @ Thu Aug 2, 2007 12:55 AM: I think Thomas might have gotten in touch with him in the last month or so. +thegoldenband
Alex Herbert definitely is still alive! He communicated with the Vectrex Overlays Yahoogroup, I believe via snail mail. I don't know anything beyond what's posted there.

Godzilla
I dunno, that wasn't even an actual reply, just someone saying they got a reply, kinda like TJs... and especially when it's someone wanting to sell repros, I could see someone saying 'yea, he wrote me a letter and said it was ok.' just so they could 'git 'r done'

Especially when he mentions that weird bit about the art being trapped on an IDE drive. And then he's like, "it might take awhile for him to retrieve it, so we might as well go ahead and recreate it..." I could SAY that Alex text messages me every single day and talks about Atari games and squirrel hunting but it would not necessarily be so ....but then again it MIGHT, no one can prove that he doesn't. +Nathan Strum
I'm sure Albert will check it out. I'm hoping it's legit and that Alex is okay. After all, it would have been just as easy for them to claim they got permission without the elaborate story.
VectrexMad!
I found this discussion whilst searching on Vectrex and what a surprise I had. I had to think twice about making a comment to this discussion lest I be wrongly accused of being a serial fibber as I am sticking to what I said previously. However, if I didn’t respond who knows how many negative comments would follow! I really did have contact with Alex. And yes its all true about how he said his artwork was on an IDE hard disk and that he currently only has a SATA PC. By the way I didn’t ask how his health was because it was the first time I had contact with him and I thought it none of my business. And about wanting to sell repros. I am not pushing the repros to make a quick buck. If it’s the Protector overlay or next most popular one makes no difference to me – there is no reason to make things up. This repro thing is a movement started by Vectrex enthusiasts who want to be able to have some overlay repros for the overlays which are hard to get. So thanks Linkert,Gozilla,Jrok,Sandmountainslim for your doubting comments. Somewhat disappointed to be doubted … VectrexMad! A.k.a Ian www.vectrex.co.uk p.s. Godzilla
Believe me, I want nothing more than to hear that he is ok And really, I don't know anything about what you are doing and was just making an assumption based soley on reading one post (which at least makes an ass out of me,) but I'm ok with that. When I have no information at all, I'd rather be a little ass and scare up some info than do nothing and not know. thank you for filling us in! I think repros are great, I buy them all the time myself. Edited July 27, 2009 by Godzilla

We just wanted to know how the guy is doing, and all we could find is some third-hand information. I'm just naturally suspicious about anything until I know all the facts. If it's on the up-and-up, so much the better. Cheers
VectrexMad!
All apologies accepted Here's something I just did. I went to Alex Herbert's AtariAge profile and I noticed that he had included is EbayID (herbs64). So then I went to eBay and searched on his eBay ID and there is proof there that he was active in 2009 because he got seller feedback dated 10-Jan 2009. When I sent Alex my letter, it was after I sent him an email and it took around 3-4 weeks to get a reply. That's why I didn't want to rely on waiting to get the artwork from Alex - I know myself how much pressures there is in all of us retro gamer's lives. regards VectrexMad! +thegoldenband
Thanks very much for your post and your efforts, Ian. Man Goes Down is one of the real masterpieces of the 2600 homebrew scene, and even if it were released "as-is" it would be top-notch. Given that, and concerns over Alex's health, it's great to have these positive developments.
RevEng
Yes, thank you for posting VectrexMad! Truthfully I too had assumed the worst after reading some of the posts in this thread, and I'm sooo glad to have been wrong. That's not a slam to you VectrexMad! To me you were just a random guy on the Internet who I didn't know anything about, and I'm glad that's changed too! Alex has brought a lot of happiness into my family with his creation of "Man Goes Down". We all play it regularly. Its the kind of game you can't watch someone play without needing to try it yourself! Totally addictive. If he doesn't want to finish it at this point that's cool... No pressure! I'm just truly relieved to hear he's alive and kicking!
