Gilles_B
Hello all, sadly, the authors webpage is now offline, and thus the latest binary no longer accessible. Is it accessible somewhere or would someone be so kind as to reach out? Many thanks! Hoping he's fine Edited October 9, 2021 by Gilles_B

Thomas Jentzsch
If you are looking for older homebrews and hacks (or a pretty complete collection of classic ROMs), look for the Good2600 tools archive, the lastest version is 3.14. Unfortunately is has not been updated since 2010. I am not sure why the author (Cowering) gave up, but I suppose the enormous number of new Atari 2600 ROMs made it impossible to keep up to date. The tools for other systems were updated until 2016, before he got banned for good reasons which I won't name here (no politics!).

I can gather the reasons from some of the posts on his blog I've got Ethaniel's collection (plus Romhunter's too, but I'm a PAL person), but hacks and homebrews are not in it. So I gather here and there over time

SS
In all the years of playing MGD, I have NEVER managed to get all of those prize boxes filled up. 😔 Does anyone know what all of the prizes are? And, what do those DOWN arrows do for you anyway?

I think the rest of the prize boxes were placeholders. I ran a quick graphics rip script on the rom, and I only see the regular items...

It's very polished in its current form (especially if you play the game with an AtariVox), and a shame that it was never finished. I've tried to contact Alex Herbert several times over the years, but have never heard from him. I hope he is doing well! ..Al
RevEng
It's a masterpiece. I think the "giant void/giant wall" ending was probably what he wanted to fix, before calling it done. Even with that ending it's still gold. Alex's domain herbs64.com, where he used to document his various projects, now appears to be a Japanese porn site. 1

Ugh, that's sad to see, as that means he likely made a conscious decision not to renew the domain name at some point. It looks like the domain redirected to www.herbs64.plus.com and that site disappeared after May, 2021. Here's the last capture from the Internet Archive: https://web.archive.org/web/20210507140749/http://www.herbs64.plus.com/ The herbs64.com domain was parked as recently as March of this year, but obviously some spammer purchased it after that time and planted porn on it. ..Al
+wavemotion
This remains my favorite unfinished game. I've come to terms that it won't be completed - but it still shines as a great original homebrew on the system.

I've come to terms that it won't be finished, but Alex's abrupt and complete departure from the hobby has always felt a bit unsettling to me. Short of showing up on his doorstep, everything was done to try and get a hold of him, to see if the game publishing could be moved forward. He either isn't seeing the messages, or he's decided to go no-contact with the entire community.

Only he can say whether that life-changing event triggered his break from the hobby, but it's tempting to think so. Lots of people make huge life changes after a stroke, by choice or necessity. If they have deficits afterward, maybe old pastimes inevitably remind them of what they've lost; if they don't, maybe the brush with mortality makes them change their priorities and take up bicycling or whatever instead. Either way, he made a wonderful game. One wishes it had gotten the green light for formal release.
+Gemintronic
If someone wanted to pass the torch batari BASIC could come close. I would bet DPC+ could do the vertical scrolling and colorful playfields. Otherwise I could see the hack allowing pfheights and pfcolors in RAM working (although now you're trading ARM assist for extra RAM).

I think that's the most likely hypothesis, but it's not so much that he chose to quit - lots of people move on the from the hobby - it's the no-contact thing that's odd. He doesn't owe anybody anything, but just a simple "I've moved on, guys" statement without any follow-up would have at least put it all to bed. Even better would have been "I've moved on. Here's the source - if someone wants to finish it for a co-credit, go for it", but that's just me being greedy.

Without Alex's permission, it doesn't feel quite right to me, though I do see an argument that it's been abandoned and fair game.

I agree about wanting to get his permission to finish it - if it were possible to do so. Several attempts have been made, to no avail.
Bomberman94
Maybe someone from the forum knows him personally then you could make contact without "going public" (and he doesn't want that). 🤔

I managed to get this warp thing when starting a new game (as I have a savekey attached). I think I got every different symbol - but not in one game. You talked about the „giant void/giant wall“ - what do you mean with that - a kind of ending and is there any footage?
RevEng
The void is just an empty level, which would normally force you to fall down and die. You can survive the void by grabbing a helipack or bubble first, and if you do, eventually you run into some golden platforms that push you off the top of the screen. There's no video of it that I'm aware of, but here's a post that has screenshots of the wall/gold-bars at the end. It's been a while since I did the whole run, but IIRC there's a bunch more bars, but they flicker in and out of existence. e1will also put together a hack that pins the player to the top of the screen, which you can use to see the void+wall and beyond. 1
