Adrian Posted August 22, 2004 Share Posted August 22, 2004 Haven't posted here on AtariAge in a while ... I've just been checking in periodically. Anyway, I went to the Classic Gaming Expo yesterday. I couldn't go today, due to too many committments at home. (This is the problem when CGE is in your own backyard, as opposed to having to fly to Vegas, where the only reason I'm there is CGE! Still, I'm glad it's so close...) Anyway, everything one needed to see you could pretty much see in a few hours. The museum was VERY cool, and jam-packed with stuff. I was in there for an hour just looking at all the materials. The panels I attended were good, if not a bit long-winded and slightly boring in parts. I heard the Activision one was good, but it ended early, so everyone could get autographs. The exhibitor floor was small ... although I guess it was around the same size as the last time I went, back in 2002. I was VERY DISAPPOINTED that AtariAge wasn't there, and not knowing about any of the drama, I started asking around, thinking it was very curious that the largest producer of Atari cartridges didn't a booth there. Didn't get much info out of anybody, other than the fact that there's some dispute between them and the Digital Press guys. Damn.... HOW FUCKING SIXTH GRADE CAN WE GET? The classic videogame community is not big enough for stupid, petty shit like this. I was kinda appalled that they wouldn't put aside their differences to show up at the largest classic gaming event in the country. I was wondering why there were no CGE announcements on the front page of AtariAge, and now I know. Sheeesh... Anyway, I was really looking forward to seeing an AtariAge booth there, but ... there wasn't. In fact, there wasn't much Atari 2600 stuff there at all actually. Atari2600.com had a TON of stuff, including three, count 'em, THREE River Patrol cartridges, just sitting there in a plastic bin -- all priced between $480-$520. But besides them, and maybe two other exhibitors, there wasn't much. Although one guy made five REALLY good hacks of Adventure, based on the Alien film series, but he couldn't sell any, due to copyright issues. But he was demoing them, and they seemed cool. No new releases really, besides Cassidy's reproduction of Frog Pond, which were all snapped up by 2 PM. I played the unreleased proto of Targ, demoed at the DP booth. It's pretty much Universal Chaos. They couldn't demo Wings on an actual 2600 (only one proto exists, and they couldn't make an EPROM of it, because it's a RAM-Plus chip), but apparently they were showing it today, running on Stella on a PC. Supposedly, it's not that good, and quite unfinished. Met and chatted with some old faces in the classic gaming community: Russ Perry Jr., Scott Stiphen, Joe Santulli, Larry Anderson, Sean Kelly, Jerry Jessop, Howard Scott Warshaw. Played a couple rounds of arcade Tapper, and nabbed one of those Jakks 5-in-1 joystick games that you hook up directly to your TV, and got a cool baby T from the http://www.theylive.com booth (their ET cartridge shirt is my favorite). HHwolfman has already left - he and his wife flew back home this afternoon. CPUWIZ left around the same time they did.
