opcode
Hi! Sorry if I am overpopulating this forum with Pac-Man related topics, but since I am not allowed to edit my old posts I decided to start a new thread in order to make things more readable. Again, this developement log is about my port of the cult Midway/GCC arcade game Ms Pac-Man, which is the second game in my planned ColecoVision title Pac-Man Collection. I hope to release PMC in cart form sometime in the future.... if I don't get sued first... 1st MS PAC-MAN UPDATE (August 31th): - Well, the opening sequence in Ms Pac-Man is working full power, and I must say it looks really nice now it is within the CV realm... Com'on, be honest, you have always found the CV the most powerful 3rd generation console, haven't you?! TODO: - Lets start the gameplay... Man, I love this game! The Lurking Horror
Hey, opcode, I'm coming totally out of the blue just to ask you this one question: Is there any possibility of you making a Anteater port someday? I play that game always in MAME and it is great fun!! Sadly the only port know to a console was that lost 2600 one Congratulations on your great work with your homebrews!!! Keep the good work![/b]
Dav
have you played oil's well? It seems to be the same game as anteater.
The Lurking Horror
Now that you mentioned this game, I remember it. It's almost the same, really. So let's not lose time with games that are already made. But of course a perfect port of Donkey Kong would be sweet.
Nukey Shay
The Atari800 version is pretty close IMO

Serguei2
Just wondering Why did you give credit to Midway MFG. Why not do you give credit to make your Pac-Man collection for Coleco unstead? Namco is the company it made all pac-man games.
Dav
GCC(they make printers now iirc) made Ms Pacman, they sold it to Midway MFG who released it. As they had a license for pacman they felt they were legally ok. The mspacman boards are a series of overlays onto the original pacman board in order to avoid any legal problems. As far as I know Namco never released a ms pacman. Namco did later force midway to give them the rights to it so they do own it now.
Serguei2
Thans Dav Since the pac-man collection is a new game for coleco, why not giving the credits to Namco since Midway MFG lost the rights on their pac-man games.
Nukey Shay
Elementary...the original says Midway. Since he's after an accurate duplication of the original...etc etc.
opcode
I am including two different versions of Pac-Man [with Pac-Man Collection]: the Midway version (Midway licensed it from Namco) and the original Namco's Puckman. Ms Pac-Man will also be presented in two versions : the original Midway version and a GCC version, which was never really released but one which I want to do as a way to pay homage to the original developers. opcode
UPDATE: September 25th Big news, Ms Pac-Man is finally fully playable! To be honest the last maze is not finished yet, but otherwise everything plays fine. Things to do: - Finish sound FX - Finish last maze - Create randomness table, so the game plays arcade perfect. Well, I was planning to have it released at next year's PC6 but after all trouble Infogrames created, I dunno. My best guess is I will sell it myself, thru mail order only. It will be the first 64KB CV game ever (I think). Eduardo

Crimefighter
Any plans to throw in the alternative Pac-Man mazes that were put out and lets say Pac Plus?
opcode
Hi folks! I am slowly getting back, after weeks of travelling around the world (well, just around the US to be honest). This week I resumed work on Pac-Man Collection, mainly Ms Pac-Man. I have now a very stable build, with all sprites already defined. The game plays very smoothly, arcade perfect. I just need to find a way to extract the exact random numbers from the real Ms Pacman arcade (so far I am using the bootleg ROM). Maybe Dav could help me here, if he is still around. Next in my todo list is: - Sound - Boards 2, 3 and 4. It's now clear to me I won't be able to place all 4 mazes in just 32KB, so probably I will need to switch between ROM banks for each board. More about it soon. Here are some screenshots:

Mock
how did you end up with 4 "lives" and only 730 points in the last screen shot?
opcode
how did you end up with 4 "lives" and only 730 points in the last screen shot? Because I set up the "dip switches" for 5 lives per credit. I am not really a good player...
Mock
lol ok...was just curious...kept looking at those screens and trying to figure out what was going on...the robot kept telling me "does not compute will robinson"...lol.
Nukey Shay
Yup...the switches on actual arcades allowed this as well. But most vendors kept the preset of 3 lives for the obvious reason of giving a shorter game for a quarter
Dav
I just need to find a way to extract the exact random numbers from the real Ms Pacman arcade (so far I am using the bootleg ROM). Maybe Dav could help me here, if he is still around. I'm still around. I've just been too busy with arcade stuff to work with consoles. After christmas I hope to get back to it. As for your problem, probably half the arcade games are running the bootleg code, so it's not as big a deal. Most repair shops will replace the auxillary board and ribbon cable with a hack that runs bootleg code. If you want the original you can use the overlay tables in the mame driver and merge them into pacman by hand. Or I think there's a way to dump from the debugger. Actually though the overlay mechanism is not 100% understood, mame may not be correct for a couple of bytes of the table. That's because the process of reading the random numbers can turn the overlays off temporarily. I plan on updating my driver sometime but I've just been too busy to do the research. opcode
UPDATE: December 04th Now it's getting closer to completion. - Second maze added. - Maze color routine added (including the special first maze in blue). - Maze table lookup bug corrected. - Blink routine completed (though I still need to include an inverted character set). To do: - Sound - 3rd and 4th mazes About the random lookup table, I am now wondering if it is really necessary with Ms Pac-Man. This game isn't like Pac-Man, with fixed patterns. There is more randomness involved here. It uses LD A,R in some places, so behaviour isn't so predictable as Pac-Man. But I will see. Anyway, thanks again Dav. Your help in this project has been invaluable.
