Which games use second button?

We just received email from someone asking us to include a list of which 7800 use the second button in the 7800 FAQ. I figured it would be easiest to ask the experts out there, and when we have a complete list we'll add the info to the FAQ. I don't know which games use the second button, but I just scanned through all the 7800 manuals briefly and came up with an initial list:

Ace of Aces

Alien Brigade

Basketbrawl

Dark Chambers

Double Dragon

Fatal Run

F-18 Hornet

Ikari Warriors

Jinks

Karateka

Mat Mania Challenge

Midnight Mutants

Motor Psycho

Ninja Golf

One-on-One

Planet Smashers

Pole Position II

Rampage

Realsports Baseball

Scrapyard Dog

Super Huey

Tank Command

Tomcat: F14

Water Ski

Did I miss any? I can't believe Xevious only uses one button!

Yeah, no kidding. I had no idea that so many 7800 games actually took advantage of both buttons. Perhaps the FAQ should list all the games that only use a single button (and would therefore work with any 2600 joystick) and those that use both buttons and threfore require a ProLine controller.

Then of course there are the games that use two buttons, but map the feature to a single button (when a single button controller is used) like Xevious.

It appears the 7800 detects which controller is hooked up when the machine powers up.

I've noticed this from playing Asteroids. If you switch from a one button to two button or vice-versa while the machine is powered up, it retains control defaulting to the original controller that was plugged in.

But perhaps this routine is written into software, not hardware... anybody know?

Cheers!

Is this really the case? The second button isn't used for anything unique Asteroids, as far as I know. A look through the manual shows that both controller buttons are used to fire. So it doesn't sound like the second button is used for any additional functionality, which is why it would work fine with a single button joystick. I don't think the 7800 is sophisticated enough to detect what type of controllers are plugged into it, much less detect controllers at all. Modern game systems do this, but their controllers are quite a bit more complex than the very simple controllers used in most classic game systems.

Hold on, there.

As far as I recall:

Left button = shoot

Right button = hyperspace

In the 2600-land, you pressed down to hyperspace. I don't remember what pressing the joystick down does in the 7800 version; either it slows you down, or does nothing at all.

Asteroids uses one button to fire and the other button for hyperspace. But the 7800 doesn't detect the controller type automatically. This has to be done by the game itself. I don't know how Asteroids does it, but when reading the proline joysticks is enabled in the 7800, then pushing a button will trigger the button line and one of the paddle lines. If there is a signal on the button line but not on either of the paddle lines, then a non-proline joystick must be connected. If there is a way to detect the joystick without having the user push a button, I'm not sure.
