2004 Stan Awards?!

Hey kids, its getting to be that time again. Time for me to dish out kudos to those that keep this hobby alive and thriving (and I don't mean Infogrames!) I'm working out the kinks for this year's awards (the 3rd annual) and want to hear from YOU regarding how you feel about the awards. If you have a second, please check out the following information and give me as much feedback as you will.

Awards will be given out this year for the following:

2600 Homebrew of the Year

2600 Hack of the Year

Atari Achievement Award

Player's Choice Award

I am wondering if there is enough of a field of competition to have a 5200 of the Year award. Would you like to see this award and do you think there are (will be?)enough releases this year to justify it?

The Player's Choice Award is back. Last year, the voter turn-out for this award was tremendous and the voting came down to the wire with a near tie! I hope this year the trend will continue. After all, this is the ONLY Award where YOU get to voice an opinion, the rest of the time you just have to put up with my opinions! ;) :D

Are there any other awards you would like to see? If so, and you don't mind, please list a short field of competitors you would like me to consider for the award.

With the Player's Choice Award, when the voting begins, I will post a list of potential nominees you can vote for, but that in no way limits who or what you can vote for, its just a brainstorming list to get you thinking (ok, Thomas? ;) )

It is my hope that the Awards will fall on time this year (late Jan. at the latest). I apologize for the absurd lateness of the Awards last year.

I may be needing some help in the production department, but I'll post more information on that as it is relevant.

If there is anything else you can think of to help me make this year's Stan Awards the greatest awards yet, please feel free to reply!

Thanks

Stan :spidey:

  • 2 weeks later...

wow, somebody actually cares! :)

Thanks Zach!

I am considering holding a contest for the award label design this year. Is there any interest in that? Dale Crum has done bang up job the past two years, but I'm giving him a year off and taking it to you the people.

I'll post more as the date approaches and I decide if I'm even having the awards this year (which depends partly on the support, or lack thereof, of you nice people!).

Thanks

Stan

I don't know if there were enough actual homebrews released this year to justify a homebrew award, but there were DEFINITELY more than enough 8-bit to 5200 conversions this year to have an award for that.

Hi there!

Guess I missed this topic the whole time, as I'm not really paying attention for the "Events" board :ponder:

Sure, I'm definitely interested in the 2004 awards! It's one of the highlights of our scene!

(Even in years I'm not winning any award ;) )

Greetings,

Manuel

Still no ColecoVision award...  :ponder:  :_(

Maybe Stan will give you a lifetime achievement award.

Cool! :)

But wait.... aren't lifetime archievement awards supposed to be given to retired people... :ponder:

Maybe a generic 5200/ColecoVision Homebrew of the Year award? :ponder:

Not always; Woody Allen got one not too long ago and he's definitely not retired.

wow, this topic had stayed dead for so long, I just figured everyone had given up on the Stan Awards! :ponder:

Anyhow, I'd LOVE to do a Coleco award, but I don't own a Colecovision and wouldn't feel right just guessing at it. There is ALWAYS a chance that your efforts will be rewarded with the Player's Choice Award. I partially created the award in the hope that the things NOT covered in the other awards would get the spotlight (however last year, Manuel's Star Fire got everyone so hot and bothered that it ran away with both it and HB of the Year!). So who knows!

I was afraid that the 5200 field would be too small, particularly with certain games being pulled thanks to that limited infraction by Infogrames. I guess we'll see as the time draws nearer.

Thanks for all the replies, guys! More information coming shortly! :) :) :) :)

Whoa I think the problem is most people don't check the events forum.

In fact most of time I dont check out the homebrew forum either.

Just happened to catch this because it was the last thread posted to and showed up on the main list!

YES! The Stan Awards should continue this year! :)

Especially, I'd like to see the "Event" award continued this year, if possible that you have enough contenders to be considered. :ponder:

It'd be kinda weird if "Globetrotter: was the only Event Award ever given out. Hmm.

Carry on! 8)

give you the "Absentee Award" Ed.

I've been pondering the Event award, but I'm also kind of hoping that the Player's Choice Award will help catch stuff like that as well. The Event Award is a toughie, because I have to actually attend or participate in the event to award it, and that really narrows the field.

The Proto Release award was a one time only, the Event award may be a one time only, maybe I'll just have a special "rotating" award every year! ;)

Thanks for the comments, people! :)

give you the "Absentee Award"

I'll take that. I better get that at PC6.

I bet you are still upset about all of our arguements that you have lost, aren't you?

Thanks for the comments, people! :)

No problem Stan. Anytime you need a comment, just say something yourself, because as sure as the sun rises in the morning and sets at night, I'll have a comment about it.

As we move toward November, several things are about to happen with the Awards.

First, the Voting for the Player's Choice Award will begin (tenatively) on Nov.2 and run until Dec. 15. I will post more details and finalized dates as they drawn near. It will run MUCH like last year's voting, except this year, as per THOMAS' ;) request, there will be a partial list of potential candidates (you are welcome to suggest new candidates as well, or even pimp your own goodsd).

Second, I am going to hold a label contest for the Award Labels. I'm working out the details on this now, and should have more information soon. So all of you aspiring artists and those with design talents get ready (keep in mind I'm a SUCKER for labels that look similar to old school VCS labels, as per those swank silver jobbies Dale turned out year one) More information will be posted as I get ready to hold the contest, but look for it around mid Nov. I'm working with Albert to get this contest official and up on the News page, so everyone will know about it.

The Awards roll on, I'm still looking for that ever elusive 5th Award to add to the list....

Thanks

Stan

Uihjah... only two weeks until the voting begins and I still don't have a clue what to vote yet...

What choices are nominated for HotY so far? Climber 5, FlapPing, INV+ and Seawolf? Tough competition...

Anything else that'll be ready in time?!?

Greetings,

Manuel

Poker Squares?????? :?

Quite possibly. :D

..Al

HOPEFULLY!

The field is pretty strong for HB of the Year. Picking will not be easy. Thus far my list looks like this: Climber 5, JoustPong, and Seawolf, with at least 2 others expected. INV+ does not apply because it is not a new release, but a rerelease of a previously released game (the same rule that exempted Thrust + Platinum two years ago).

Voting will start closer to the end of the week of Nov. first as I try to coordinate everything with the label contest, the voting and the awards themselves (plus balance grad school and work!)

The cut off for ANY submission for ANY Stan Award is Dec. 15. Get those projects in! Oh, and if you want to be SURE I don't miss something you did, you can always PM me a BIN of the game/hack so I am sure to see it and play it!

Thanks!

Extremely tough call on that one. Almost a dead even tie, IMHO. 8)

My first thought about the HACK OF THE YEAR was that it would be a fairly easy choice. However, since Nukey still isn't quite ready to call it finished I'm now wondering if it would be eligible for this year's award or not. :?

Narrowing Hack of the Year has been tougher than you might think. I've got it down to a handful right now, but its going to be tough to pick. Afterall there were hundreds of hacks this past year!

As for Nukey, I'm not ENTIRELY sure I can call what he is doing "hacking." Too much of that is original work he is doing that is merely based off of existing work. Let's be honest, Nukey has worked that thing from the ground up and has changed just about EVERYTHING from the original code. I can't in good faith, really call that a "hack." And besides, if I know Nukey, there is NO WAY that baby will be done by Dec. 15.... ;)
