Cousin Vinnie
I remember reading in Atari's sorry a-- mag that this was in development. Anybody heard of such a thing B-4? Cousin Vinnie www.bigfishusa.com/7800
Dark_Halmut
Actually a group of guys were making smb for i think the c64 and regular comps. Anyway, they made a few levels and liked their home-made graphics so much that it gave birth to everyone's favorite hero: Comander Keen and ID software. Joey Kay
I think I know how this rumour started. Back in 1990 or so (I'll have to dig out the magazine) a reader wrote GamePro bitching that Atari had released new games for the 7800 but he couldn't find them anywhere. Anyhow, GamePro forwarded the letter to Atari, and the response in the magazine was from an Atari executive. Here's where the rumour may have started. The GamePro reader who wrote the letter cited a bunch of new Atari releases he couldn't find in stores, and mistakenly listed "Super Mario Bros." in the letter (I guess he was thinking of regular Mario Bros). My curiousity was sparked at the time, so I phoned Atari and asked. They told me they had not released, announced, or planned the title. It's been my assumption that this magazine reader letter was where this rumour started. Which "sorry a--" mag did you see this in, Cousin Vinnie? Maybe the rumour didn't start from GamePro. Cheers! King Atari
Nobody knows better about the C=64 SMB than me!
Cousin Vinnie
The Atarian...I'll have to look it up. The mag I have has a painting of the Jungle Hunt guy swinging on a vine on the cover. Cousin Vinnie PS: How long was the C64 around?
Adrian M
Never heard of it for the 7800. There was a conversion of SMB made for the C64 though. It wasn't legal and never saw an official distribution. Maybe that's what you heard?
Mayhem
As the C64 guru here... the story... Back in 1987, a German company called Rainbow Arts released a SMB clone for the C64 called Great Giana Sisters. Some months later, when it has been released abroad, Nintendo banned the game and forced it to be taken off the shelves. Hence outside Germany it's a pretty rare game, and original copies are worth $20-30 if you can find them. Not the first time it happened to Rainbow Arts either. They also got slapped by Activision for selling an R-Type clone called Katakis. The game was rejigged and resold as Denaris a few months later. Katakis originals are also worth $15-20 if you can find them. Some enterprising bods then decided to hack the game and replace the main sprite with one of Mario instead. This is the SMB version you'll find floating on the net for the C64. It's a hack.
Mayhem
And the answer the question about how long the C64 has been around... during the CGExpo this year, we will be celebrating 20 years of the machine From my sources, it was first sold on August 16th 1982... That's how I remember it, though I remember it being in VIDEO GAMES & COMPUTER ENTERTAINMENT. But seriously, VG&CE also said that GREMLINS was an excellent game for the 7800! Joey Kay
Mark... I think you're right. That was the magazine. I've got a whole schwack of those old magazines, I get them confused. I don't remember the game being mentioned in Atarian (Jungle Hunt issue) - I only have issues 2 and 3, however. Maybe it was in issue #1. Let's hope we can figure this one out! Cheers! +Propane13
Pretty sure I've seen this, and pretty sure I own the doc. Will research tonight and post here. -John K. Harvey
King Atari
I played the C=64 clone on disk at a computer show once, so I'm guessing it was simply put on disk later. I doubt it was ever officially released.
Albert
I can't imagine that Nintendo would have ever let Atari release Super Mario Bros. They were too busy clobbering Atari with the NES and I doubt at that point they would have given Atari the time of day, much less the rights to one of their most popular titles. I don't know very much about Atari 7800 programming, but does it also support tile graphics like the NES? ..Al
Gunstar
There is a SMB clone out for the Atari 8-bits called "Bros." it uses the graphics mode 7 medium res., which IIRC is 160x92, roughly that of the Lynx, with less colors. It is however, an enoyable game.

Jetboot Jack
Hmmm.. Scrapyard dog had such short levels compared with SMB, in fact all scrolling 7800 games had short levels (DD included) - I wonder if the difficulty of horizontal scolling put developers off, or lack of ROM/RAM??? sTeVE
