VGXPO : November 12/13 : Fort Washington, PA

I will be there with Nicadoo (my wife Nicole) and our special over-the-Atlantic-pal Osmeroid. We have been looking forward to seeing all the folks from AA. Regardless of the show, it is ALWAYS great to see the people we talk to all the time online. I think that is the real strength of the show.

I am not going to be a vendor however. I am defending my Masters degree on Nov. 18 and have simply not had time to price, clean and get all my stuff ready. Those who know what my tables look like Saturday morning know Nicole and I work VERY hard to get a good selection together. If I cannot do 100%, I am not able to do it at all. I hope to see lots of AA people there. Osmeroid is flying a LOOOOOONG way to see friends :) (ok and drink Guinness with us all). Even if NBC doesn't like it, we'll have fun anyway :)

So...Who will be there for sure?  I confirmed that the Atari2600.com booth will be there.  I'd like to know so I can make it around to all displays.

I'll be there trying to trade some Colecovision carts + other cool stuff (putting together a list now). Won't have a booth, though, and will probably just be wandering around with a shoebox. :)

Amidst the drama and brutal honesty in this thread, I think there's an opportunity here.

You couldn't buy a more solid statement of direction than what's been posted here the last couple of days. While it seems that (to many) vgXpo has turned into a less-than-perfect venue for this community, there could be overwhelming support for a show that:

1. Targets existing and prospective classic gaming hobbyists

2. Draws in fresh meat through relevant communications instead of vacant, broad-interest lures

3. Doesn't incur a lot of unnecessary overhead (hey, aren't older hotels right in line with the whole "retro" theme anyway?)

4. Isn't tied to the restrictions of large sponsors thanks to lower overhead

5. Is principally concerned with the welfare of the hobbyist community by promoting healthy participation and encouraging people to spend their hard-earned money on some great retro swag

At least, that's what it sounded like your expectations were. The above certainly sounds like something I'd like to be a part of.

Thelbane is right, there is a place for that kind of event. I love small classic game shows. What you are describing is a lot like what Philly Classic was during its first two shows. The first show was in a college building, the second, a hotel meeting room. These were fun shows with 30 and then 300 people. It was an event that you could go to, meet with friends and buy some great games. There are other events just like this across the country (small and large). Shows like ECGX, CinciClassic, and OVGE are great events, lots of fun and labors of love for the show organizers.

PhillyClassic 3,4,5 got large and expensive to run. The last PhillyClassic show had over 2600 people attend. When I got involved with it, the vgXpo was planned to continue growing, but to do so would require a lot more convention space and a lot more marketing efforts - that's why I teamed up with NBC. My vision for the future of vgXpo is to creat a show that is a lot like PhillyClassic and CGE, but taken to the next level. I hope to grow to some day be the size of E3, but when (and if) we get there, that's years and year off. I make this pledge, as show organizer, classic and retro games, homage to gaming history and a market place, will always play a role in vgXpo.

I never imagined alienating anyone with the direction that I am taking vgXpo in. I sincerely hope that anyone planning on attending the vgXpo, or who is on the fence realizes that I am a game collector just like you. When I got involved with the show I put me heart into it. I loved the old PC show and wanted to make sure that I continued its traditions and added new things to attract more gamers. From there vgXpo was born - I hope that if you do attend, that you have fun, buy games and be sure to talk to the newbies and tell them about how much you love playing and collecting retro games.

As ed just said, we had that once and it was called PhillyClassic, and it was wonderful. I think we are seeing a clear case of bigger not being better. I had a bad feeling about this when the cell phone companies popped up with booth space at PC5...

I'm not happy with the stuff I'm hearing about this show.. but there are still many people attending that I would like to meet and hang out with. I don't suppose anyone in the southern ohio/norther kentucky area will be driving out there? I can't help with the driving but I can donate money for food and gas. Not looking forward to the 15 hour greyhound trip.

Hi folks,

I just got the floor plan for how the VGXPO floor plan is going to fit within the Consumer Fest and I wanted to send along the info. You can see the plan at the following URL:

http://fp2.a2zinc.net/clients/fpne/public/...aspx?EventID=29

What you'll see is the VGXPO is about 1/3 of the total space for the expo. We are in the rear of the hall, behind a stage. In front of us are vendors such as: American Radio League, Internet Presentations Group, PC Users of NJ, M-4 Flight Simulator, Virtual Nascar, and a large youth Robotics Competition. Other NBC vendors of interest include: BMW, Trump, Subaru, Pontiac.

There are a number of small vendors that will be at the show, which include more of the finacial, and home components that you have read about. These include ING Direct, Owens Corning and Orleans Homes. Most of the other vendors are small companies or non-profits. For the most part these vendors are located at the front of the exhibit hall and represent about 25% of the space.

I had a preliminary floor plan designed prior to getting this new layout. Based on this new layout, I'll make changes to it in the next day and provide a link when it’s ready.

Also, wanted to let everyone know that we've officially added Game Crazy, EB Games and Red Octane to the show. Red Octane plans to feature Guitar Hero in its booth. They will also sponsor an In the Grove dance competition (in replacement of DDR).

It's kind of a shame that the show got so big, but I'll be there for sure.

I'm thinking of going on Saturday with my 3-year-old and coming back on Sunday if I need to do some hardcore shopping.

I'm figuring on a fairly light wallet, so I just want to go have some fun and meet people, and maybe come home with a couplea carts.

I just wanted to let everyone know that AtariAge will be at the show, with plenty of game systems to play (2600, 5200 and ColecoVision), new homebrew games to try out and buy (more details on these soon), and a fair number of in development demos for the 2600, 5200 and ColecoVision. While I don't necessarily agree with all the changes that vgXpo brings to the table, I do still think it'll be an enjoyable show and I expect many classic gamers to be on hand. There are a fair number of vendors and the actual space for vgXpo is twice the size of PhillyClassic 5 last year. I don't think there will be any video game fans sitting around for lack of games to play, trade, and buy.

I am working on some pages that describe the new games we'll be selling as well as all the demos we'll be showing. I should have those online tomorrow, just working out some final details.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Philly!

Ok… I talked with Albert and decided that we would split the cost (going to the show), so count me in. I’ll be bringing video game comics (Sonic, Zelda, Blip, Double Dragon, Mortal Kombat, Tomb Raider, etc), shrink-wrapped 2600 games, loose N64, Sega, SNES, NES, and some rare games for the Colecovision, Atari XE, 2600, and C=64. I also have common TI-99, COCO, XE, and 2600 carts but we are very limited on space (I might bring a few if anyone is interested). So bring CASH.

I still have some major concerns about the show, but will keep them to myself. (I hope Ed is pounding the pavement handing out flyers)

See you at the show!

I have also taked with Albert this week And I have decided to give the show another chance so I will be selling all my goods. I am also glad Smitty is going to sell some goods, I got to chat with him at the Texas show and we did buy and sell games and other good stuff with each other.

Now I really hope ED is getting the word out around town and that added to who came last year things might turn out very good for everyone.

I am only going to bring what I can fit in my car to save on gas but my online store is filled up with the rest. PM me if you see something on my site and I will bring it plus more.

The Philly Classic is a show of the past now and that’s really what I am supporting by attending since that was the place to meet up with old friends and meet many new friends I only hope this new format will continue with that success.

Don’t forget to introduce yourself to me so I can put a face with a name at the show and I really want to hang out with the group Sat night.

I am interested in both the TI99 and the COCO common carts so if you could bring along a few I'll be sure to check them out. Thanks!
