Synthcart Beat Contest Winners!

Paul Slocum

Recommended Posts

There were a lot of great entries which made this very difficult, but I've finally picked my three favorites:

Hally Submission #2

Felemel Submission #2

Jeff Gregory Submission #1

Although only the three top entries win a free Synthcart, I will include some of the other entries on the cartridge. I'm still finalizing my decision on this, and I will announce these in a few days. If you have a favorite that you think needs to be included, let me know.

Thanks to everyone for your participation, and thanks to Albert for sponsoring the contest!

If there are enough people who are willing to submit songs, I might consider making an Atari song CD. I'm working on a track right now myself.

My current layout includes the beat from Felemel #3 but not the bass-line. I'm going to try to finalize the beats tonight. I'll post the list when I finish.

I already did the label. I wanted it in a vector graphics format since I was taking it to a print shop. And most of the label had to be a chart of the sound settings anyway. You can see it here:

I've decided which beats will be included on the Synthcart. The Synthcart is so much better because of all these great beats.

Part of my decision was based on how well beats combined with other beats. Most of the entries are made up of two combined beats, and in some cases I just used one of the two. In cases where I did this, I indicate A or B.

Battlezone 1A

Felemel 1

Felemel 2

Felemel 3

Hally 1A

Hally 2

Hernan Callo 2A

Jeff Gregory 1

Moycon 1B

Randy Ball 1A

Randy Ball 5A

Scot Kinnebrew 1A

Smitty 4B

Thanks again for all the great entries!

It really helps if you've programmed drum machines before because then you kinda know where stuff goes to get a normal sounding beat. When I was making my beats I did a lot of copying and pasting too. I got some basic drum patterns down and then I'd modify them into new ones. Mostly I used the noise sound at a low pitch for a kick drum, middle pitch for a snare, and high pitch for a high hat. I'd make a simple beat using those, then fill in other cool noises between.

Here's Hally #2:

Even though the contest was extended for an extra week, I was unable to craft a beat that I thought was worthy of entry. On the other hand, the beats that were submitted are incredibly creative and well crafted.

So how did you guys do it? Would anyone be willing to share their expertise by posting a beatdata.h file here? I'm especially interested in seeing the work of Randy Ball and Hally.

TIA
