+kheller2
Does anyone else have these? I really liked them and was wondering if there was more recent software for them .. or if I have the latest and somone needs a copy. I found this during a google search.. from one of the writers. http://www.oldcrows.net/~patchell/atari/duplicator.html
ijor
I consider the Happy a much better product than the Duplicator. Hardware wise they are virtually the same, but Happy's firmware and software is much better. I think the latest sofware I have is 3.0. But the links you posted (thank you very much for that) seem to be the sources for version 3.10. I always thought that the firmware and software author was Bob Gardner, guess I was wrong. +kheller2
I have 5.0. I never owned a happy, but the duplicator heavily competed with it.. atleast in advertising. The thing I didn't like about the happy was that some of the copies would only work on a happy. Probably the best is the CSS Archiver. The Duplicator also had a patch disk similar to chipmunk that let you fix games it couldn't copy. However, it did copy an aweful lot and the track buffering was incredible...especially if you used a high speed driver .. almost sounded like format.. almost. I liked it much more that the USDoubler... faster too. My disks says Duplicating Technologies (Formaly Gardner Computing) or something like that. ijor
The thing I didn't like about the happy was that some of the copies would only work on a happy. And how you copied those disks with the Duplicator? You couldn't copy them (only patch them) at all. Those disks copies that required a Happy; are disks whose protection can't be reproduced with the Happy/Duplicator hardware. It wasn't an ideal solution, but there was no other solution without extra hardware. Probably the best is the CSS Archiver. The CSS Super Archiver (or the original Spartan CHIP) is far inferior than the Happy or the Duplicator. The only big plus of the Super Archiver is for copy protected disks in Medium Density. Only when you add the Fuzzy Sector Maker and the BIT writer, then the Super Archiver capabilities are better. The Archiver Editor software is nice though. But you can use it with the Happy as well (with some restrictions). The Duplicator also had a patch disk similar to chipmunk that let you fix games it couldn't copy. This has no relation to the hardware. There were several products like these, but you don't need any 1050 enhancement to use them.
ijor
I have 5.0 ...My disks says Duplicating Technologies (Formaly Gardner Computing) or something like that. I will be interested in ATR images of 5.0. If you want I can send you older versions. Not sure why you would want them, but if you do. Might be 5.0 fixed most of the defects in the versions I knew. The last version I have doesn't have accurate skew algn. copy (needed for disks like MULE), doesn't have fast buffered sector writing, etc. Do you still have original copy protected disks? If so, and if you are interested in beta testing some software let me know.

As for ATRs.. as soon as I purchase some stuff from AtariMax. As I recall, however, one of the 5.0 disks is copy protected itself... rather odd actually. I wasn't trying to state the Duplicator was better because of the SW patch solutions... I meant to convey, and did a poor job of it, that I was unhappy with most of the copy products that were HW based because of the limitations they had -- which is somewhat expected. I have no idea where I picked up the Duplicator... I was just rather impressed with the speed of it compared to the USD. And now that AtariMax has some Happy boards for a good price... I'll need to snag some.
ijor
that I was unhappy with most of the copy products that were HW based because of the limitations they had -- which is somewhat expected. There are/were superb hardware copy products, but not A8 based. Best, by far, is the Discovery Cartridge (Happy product for ST computers). Second best is the Catweasel for the PC. I understand that latest version of German A8 drives were very powerful as well, but don't know much details about them.

It might need the 5.0 ROM rev though.. it doesn't specify. I assume you used the skew copy program. Edited July 25, 2005 by kheller2
carmel_andrews
Never owned a duplicator (heard about it) owned both a happy 1050, lazer/usd 1050 and a speedy 1050 and lastly an SA2 1050, SA2 1050 and speedy and happy/ lazer were all pretty similar with similar capabilites, although speedy 1050 had better upgrade options There was another option which was I S Plate 1050, supposedly emulated all previous upgrades though o/s patches, in the UK chips/data direct (worthing) used to import it

+kheller2
I have uploaded all the documents I have on the 1050 Duplicator to the Internet Archive. Installation Guide 3.0 Software Guide - This was already there but was missing a cover note about needing the 5.0 chip. 4.0 Software Guide 5.0 Software Guide DTI Product Line 1050 Duplicator Comparison/Marketing About the 1050 Duplicator List of copyable/problematic software titles and which version of the 1050 Duplicator you need. There should be 8 PDFs, 4 are in the "Product Line" group. https://archive.org/details/@kheller2 5
