I agree.. one of the main reasons I wanted this system was so that I could have an authentic Atari Quadrun game without the expense of $100's. $40 Canadian (my estimatd price) for the new flashback with games I wouldn't buy on ebay.. sold! :)

Not to mention the awesome sequels and homebrews... even if they're not great they'll part of a bargain priced unit! Atari Climber was on my 'gotta get the homebrew' list but with this unit.. it's included!

Back to the topic... if the sound chip only affected say Outlaw then I wouldn't really care as the sounds/noise used in that game are extremely basic. But for Quadrun it's 'claim to fame' is the voice.

Suggestion: Try first, and complain second.

Yes, the voice is missing in Quadrun. Does it annoy me that I don't have a "perfect" game machine? I suppose so, a little, but let's keep it in perspective. The problem is only apparent in between levels, and it only affects one of the 40 included games.

Other Atari plug and play systems included problems such as inaccurate translations, missing sounds in gameplay, poor collision detection, and digital controls for analog paddle games. The Quadrun flaw is insignificant compared to those faults.

This is just my opinion, of course, and I never really liked Quadrun anyway. :P

I myself am turned off from purchasing the FB2 right now because I dont wanna get stuck with a system that wont have proper sound for all games.

And anybody is supposed to care... why? It's a known problem. It's been fixed. Only the early-run systems have this issue. If you don't want to get a system with this problem, just wait and buy one somewhere other than Wal-Mart.

In short, what is the point of this poll?

How many defective units are hitting the shelves ? 1000s ? how many members belong to AA ? I believe my poll was valid due to being that most of us would want to run right out and buy it and yet at the same time dont want that sound problem, some of us are going to be modding the FB2 and wouldnt want possible sound problems with some carts.

Dont be an ass clown, change your tampon :P

And once again... so what? If a million Atari fans logged on here and voted that they're going to wait, reality would be influenced not one bit. What's done is done.

If the poll is asking whether people would prefer a fixed unit to a defective one... well duh. You need a poll to figure that one out?

Has anyone checked with Wal-Mart if, under their return policy, someone could buy a FB2, then exchange it for a new one when the non-defective units hit the shelves? That way people who want one now can have their cake and eat it too.

Some people might be wanting to buy their FB2 early to show everyone that there is a lot of demand for the FB2 and help it launch successfully, so that the tasty FB3 being rumored by Curt actually comes to life...

You think all shoppers who have one of these units in their shopping carts will even

know there is sound problem "defect" ? If "1" person who doesnt know any better stumbles across AA for the first time and reads this thread and it prevents them from getting the unit now or it gets them to return it, then this thread isnt a waste.

Logic exercise:

1. Plenty of people bought the Flashback 1, flaws and all, and had some fun with it.

2. By any measure, the Flashback 2 is better than the first one -- twice the number of games at a lower price, not to mention the higher Atari fidelity.

3. The casual purchaser isn't going to notice the miniscule Quadrun sound issue, let alone care about it.

4. The hardcore fan, who knows about Quadrun and probably reads this forum, will decide for him/herself whether this 75-cent issue is worth worrying about.

What was the purpose of the poll again? To make Atari look bad? The people who don't care won't vote in it, but the cranks looking for things to hate about Atari will flock to it.

Doesn't bother me at all, I just want one NOW. My Walmarts still don't have it.

I will probably buy another one later on, though, if they start showin up with the voice.

The packaging/manual doesn't specifically say that the Quadrun on the FB2 has voice, does it? It just says Quadrun is one of the games. I wouldn't even consider that defective or anything... probably shouldn't be able to return it, but I'm sure you could if you wanted.

If I understand correctly, it's actually more fundamental than that. One of the two voices doesn't work. Which means that all games will be missing a lot of sound effects; if you hack it to add a cartridge port, whatever you play will be missing as much as half of its audio. Seems pretty significant to me. Anyway, I'm content to wait. Patience.

The manual mentions the synthesized voice. D'oh!

I haven't noticed missing sound channels on other games, and like I suggested, better to try it yourself and see.

Maybe Curt can speak to this?

  • 2 weeks later...

I myself don't really care about the sound issue because I knew about it before I bought it..

I think it is absolutely fantastic that they admitted it has a problem... How many companies these days actually admit a mistake..

The thing that does bother me is the jumpy screens on some games.... That is not saying much for there QC department..

The sound issue doesn't really bother me. Games with problems like jumpy screens bother me more.

I think what annoys me the most is that problems like that end up on the shelves. I understand that there are schedules and budgets to meet, but every game with "issues" (especially ones that affect casual consumers as much as accuracy-checking fanmonkeys) mean more consumers less willing to get the next product.
