NightSprinter
Ok, since we're now getting word of the second shipment of the Flashback2 arriving in stores and such, what's the status for those who went and modded the new units in terms of cartridge compatibility? Is it still at 90%, or has it gone up or down?
Gregory DG
Not to derail the focus of the thread, but is there a way to tell the two versions apart? Curt?
NightSprinter
Hey, I'm not offended in the least Greg. Apparently from this thread FB2 In Wide Release Tomorrow (?) a new run of FB2 systems were made that seem to address problems in game like Quad Run and such. Honestly, I would also like to hear from Curt on this as well.

Is that correct Curt ? @ Gregory DG: Thats a good question, I took a pic of the barcode from qvc and if you look closely at the picture you will see it was placed over the original barcode and you can see the original model# through the sticker, I wonder if all the corrected ones will have that barcode sticker. Im going to look at the fb2's that ive seen at walmart from last week and see if they too have the sticker barcode over original. If not I wouldnt buy it, maybe thats a way to tell from the outside ? Curt Vendel
Not to derail the focus of the thread, but is there a way to tell the two versions apart? Curt? 942120 No way to really physically tell, simply put, by now most of the originals at Walmart should be exhausted, so everything else is revB's. NightSprinter
Ah, so essentially.. the compatibility is more or less the same as Ver. A? Sounds a bit odd if the new batch was supposed to fix a lot of problems the originals had.

Sounds a bit odd if the new batch was supposed to fix a lot of problems the originals had. 942175 It depends on your definition of "compatilble." If I've interpreted the various forum posts correctly, the sound issue was the only bug addressed by the rev. B update. For one thing, this means Quadrun will now actually say "Quadrun" during the game. By some people's definition, that means compatibility has been improved. However, since this doesn't actually increase the number of games playable (Quadrun was still playable, even if you didn't get to hear everything), others would say compatibility remains the same. Curt, if you're still reading this thread, am I right in assuming the graphics bug affecting Galaxian and other games was not fixed in rev. B? Am I also remembering correctly that you said a new batch (rev. C?) would fix that issue next year?
Curt Vendel
That label is actually a QVC label for their own internal inventory purposes. If you're buying from QVC, all of their units are Rev B's Curt Ok, since we're now getting word of the second shipment of the Flashback2 arriving in stores and such, what's the status for those who went and modded the new units in terms of cartridge compatibility? Curt Vendel
The corrections were several days after a small initial batch for Walmart were done to correct the Sound issue back in June, this had nothing to do with some minor incompatibility issues found 4-6 weeks afterwards. Curt Vendel
Units manufactured for Europe, Pan-Asia and then 2nd fill orders for the US will have all the incompatibility issues discovered corrected, jsoper has delivered a listing of games and they were addressed in the engineering lab and the next die of the chips in the next 500K batch will have more compatibility in 06' runs, the initial 860K units built are completed and on the water or have already arrived in the US for delivery to retailers. A2600
As Kokovec has stated in his site the FB2 guys want you to add a connector port by stsing it very clearly in the FB2 Rev. B board!! I just find that amazingly cool!! BTW AWSOME site Kokovec!!
Kokovec
As Kokovec has stated in his site the FB2 guys want you to add a connector port by stsing it very clearly in the FB2 Rev. B board!! I just find that amazingly cool!! BTW AWSOME site Kokovec!! 965755 Thanks for the compliment By the way I noticed that the Rev B board's video quality has suffered a bit. The games on the internal ROM seem fine but when you use a cart the luminance and chrominance levels goe up and there are noticeable "ghosting" effects on certain games. Most games with light colored playfields (such as Chopper Command) will show faint bars in the middle of the screen as well as give away the position of off-screen sprites. The video noise (or “ghosts”) are very visible on certain side scrollers. I am wondering if all units show these effects or just mine. I’ll have to purchase and mod another unit to find out. The Rev A board's video was rock solid (I checked both boards out on a video waveform monitor). Game play has not suffered though and the sounds are awesome. Also, the 5 volt regulator gets too hot to touch. Something for other hackers out there to look out for. I love the FB2. Thank you to Curt and team! I can hardly wait for the FB3. I hope the other guys are taking notice because the bar has been set.
adams_ale
Flashback 3? Is the Flashback 2 selling that well?! I've yet to actually see one in a store around here, maybe they are just sold out.
adams_ale
double post error. Hope the Flashback 2 is indeed selling well as it bodes well for the classic gaming community as a whole. I'll be picking one up whenever they become available or visible for that matter in my area. Edited November 18, 2005 by adams_ale
