Defender II ROM's

If I remember my video game history correctly, Defender II was never actually released as such in the arcades. It wasn't until after its arcade run that Midway had to change the name.

At any rate, Defender II is not on the list of games currently supported by MAME (as of version 0.102).

If it really was only a name change, you should be able to hack the Stargate binaries to display the right graphics. Alternatively, perhaps one of the early Arcade's Greatest Hits releases has usable ROM images, assuming they aren't encrypted (not likely, but possible).

I'm working on a project for a customer with a legal license to use Midway/Williams assets and one of the games included will be Defender II (Not Stargate) does anyone have a zipfile of the ROM's for mame use that they could email me?

Thanks,

Curt

I've never heard of anyone claiming to have it or even seen it. You'll probably have to hack stargate, kind of a pain, but not completely impossible.

I did some research and yup, you are correct, I know the Dreamcast collection has Defender II on it (named so since of the trademark/name issue) So that may be the route, just change the name. Interesting how the Atari 2600 also has a Defender II and Stargate...

Both have the same catalog number (CX26120 [i pulled that from memory {I'm such a geek <and I expect some other geek to look it up in the hopes they can call me on it :D>}]), so I think it's safe to say they are otherwise the same game.

If you have Midway Arcade Treasures 1 or any of the other Midway/Williams compilations that include the interviews with the game designers, the Defender guys talk about the name change. They also talk about the 2600 release, and how "they" had to go in and change the code to display the correct name. I still don't know whether that means it was the Midway guys themselves that did the hacking, or simply that Midway had to ask Atari to do it. At any rate, I think the Atari 2600 version was the only one that saw distribution both before and after the name change, so it's the only one that got both names.
