moycon
Doesn't seem like that would be legal anyways. Maybe they have to charge so much to pay for the lawyer they will eventually need.
Red 5
That is stupid. The link below takes you to a dead on arcade version. Bought mine at EB a while back and loaded it onto my MAME cab. Same 'Upgrade Pack' for a $650 discount, and this one is definitely legal. http://www.pcmall.com/pcmall/shop/detail~dpno~338984.asp Edited February 21, 2006 by therealred5
Blackjack
I think they're liscenced... isn't that the "crap" cabinet that Target was trying to sell?
Paranoid
No... this Arcades Legends cabinet is the one you can buy at Fry's and I think Costco. It has quality controls (not Jakks's quality like the Target deal) and a real cabinet, not a 4 foot hunch-back inducing cabinet. This unit even has a coinbox and mechanism, I believe. I think the marquee is back-lit by a florescent light... etc... It is simply a high end solution... and the license packs that go with it are all expensive, too. You can certainly buy licensed PC versions of most of the games, or use MAME... but... this is probably a lot closer to the original experience than anything else you're going to find (MAME included). And the price really isn't out of line for a quality MAME cabinet... anyone who has looked at MAME cabinet prices or even done a DIY cabinet can tell you... doing it right isn't a real inexpensive solution. By the time you get done with all the little details...

These cabs are public coin-op ready, and that's what the licensing is really scaled for I suppose.
Red 5
As most of you know, Dragon's Lair and LD games are close to impossible to get running in MAME. So I run the 20th anniversary edition seperately in my MAME cab. and I seriously doubt anyone could tell the difference. The 20th anniversary edition has an 'Arcade' setting. It looks dead on to me. And if it's not dead on, I bet the upgrade they sell isn't $650 better !
Blackjack
I use Daphne for the laser disc games.
Paranoid
I use Daphne for the laser disc games. 1022103[/snapback] I still haven't been able to track down the MPEGs (using Torrents)... so I think the Daphne solution (while probably the BEST) isn't that accessible to a wide range of people. If I can't find it... Joe Average isn't going to be able to, either. I haven't looked REAL hard... but, I've done some sniffing around. If I was going to really go for it, I'd probably just do the solution TheRealRed5 did and have a legitimate, licensed copy rather than deal with Daphne. Paranoid
I've tried Usenet... but I don't have the dedication or patience to browse it day after day waiting for a repost... and I'm actually a little shy about putting out a request for a repost in the current poltical climate surrounding copyright issues. Paranoid
Completely. Heh. I don't even like discussing it in a hypothetical/rhetorical sense here on the forums, honestly. When the RIAA started suing 80 year old ladies and 12 year old girls, it got my attention. Which is exactly what they planned. Still, for a multi-million dollar industry to try and legally crucify 12 year old girls... But yeah, everyone knows the story...

If you have the 20th anniversary edition DVD, then you can use Daphne. Just rip them yourself, there's a utility (DVD2Daph) for that. It'll get DL and Space Ace. Not DL II yet (I don't think..). I did that with my 20th, and it plays great. (And is paid for.. :-) desiv

I'm not sure about how logging works on a Usenet server, but I'm sure it exists, and I wouldn't want to be on the wrong side of a DOJ subpeona for some RIAA DMCA sweep.
