all I can say is.. GRRRRRRRRR.. it has been 5 hours since I last found/understood anything ..... My hat's off to pitfall harry for this one.. it is briliant!! but it looks as if my celebration of the 20th will be playing the classic.

Plus, above the manual looking picture of Pitfall Harry swinging on the vine on the Pitfall map page, there seems to be some x's and t's.

The x's and t's are part of the text I posted already (the one with the still unaswered "KG"-question).

The best hint I can give you is to edit the palette.

Mystic: How goes the journey?

Journeyman: Not so good. I see many things now... things that were once hidden. Yet I see nothing but mysteries leading to more mysteries.

Mystic: Perhaps. But remember also that every solution leads to another solution. Such is the nature of logic. You must look harder to discover the hidden order of things.

Journeyman: I have found order. And I've squinted at it down to the atoms, but still all I see is chaos.

Mystic: No! In all things there is order. But order is not always readily apparent to a disorderly mind, especially when order itself has been ordered.

Do not be misled by the limitations of the eye. Even the apes can see the fruit in the trees. They eat it and then it is gone. A man may struggle mightily before at last he grasps a fruit. The wisest is he who understands the lessons of the seeds.

Journeyman: Did you help write the tax codes for the IRS?

Mystic: No.

There is Microsoft Gif Animator, you can view every frame with that.

Or you can stop the animation by resizing the program window. That's what I did with the scorpion text and ACDSee.

So basically what Ben is saying is that all the letters and things we find in different pictures can lead to other clues. Just try to make out what the clues are saying. GREYINK could mean go to the grey link or something. Really I have no clue of what GREYINK means but do you?!?! And yes it is useful to use tools such as Aimation Shop for the job.

Okay...

How did you get that out of the left tree? I'm looking at a line at the top of it (finally got a contrast that works well), but is there more inside?

As far as "crypt", what hint should help find it -- just a palette change?

That's another mystery... Is that from the top of the right tree? I don't see the poem!

I also don't see "GREYLINK" in Harry (I assume you mean the one at the bottom?) -- in fact, after the first frame, the additional frames are appearing as just a dot, not Harry (one of the scorpion frames did the same thing). Weird...

Anyway, haven't gotten any further on any of this... And I'm not seeing some of what you guys have. Will try to play with the palette a little now. :-)

Not sure this is related...but has anyone else noticed that the main pitfall pic on the homepage has the score and time set exactly 20 digits difference? Most likely to commemorate the 20th anniversary of PitFall! Just thought that was interesting. I also have discovered most if not all of what you all have been talking about. I want to add something else to this...

we know about the hidden messages in the upper left and right pics...and I assume we know about the boxes in the border of the map on the left and top of the map...those boxes seem to have offset colors every so often inside which has to be related to what you guys thought was Morse code.

Now the braille bit stumps me...but tell me if I am correct on this. The braille you mention...are you talking about the lines going from the scorpions on the map itself? there are only about 3 locations that have the offset colors there also...but they would be about 3 lines high each...

Now that I have seen this for myself...I too am intrigued...count me in for now...

My progress...(official contestant #9 btw)

I've seen the box code in the outer border, it appears to be made of 3 different shades of green. It could be morse code, but it is going to be tough to weed out. I'll work on it.

I have the braille translated, but as with most other clues, it doesn't make a lot of sense, yet.

The left tree code doesn't quite fit with the symbols (unless Thomas was abole to get a very clear piture of those letters), but using Thomas' interpretation (about the trio is not...) I think it may have something to do with the number code.

Good work so far everyone, let's keep it up!!

You mean where the numbers are 1982 - the year Pitfall was released - and 2002 - this year? Never noticed.

The boxes on the left & top borders aren't the box code I mean. I'm hesitant to mention where to find them in case I'm the only one... :-) But does this look familiar:

code:

+--+-

| |

+--+

Also, what's the "number code" people keep mentioning? Is this the Braille, or the "boxes" left & top, or something else?

Well Russ, if you are reluctant to share your box code, maybe we are reluctant to share the number code Anyway, the border box code isn't morse code as far as I can tell, unless Morse code suddenly has 4 differently lengthed lines...looks like another dead end for now.

The only advise I can give is to use paint to "spill" colors against the background to make things more visable. You can also use the dropper to "pick up" a color on the map into the paint cursor's background color, and use the erase** tool to change it to another color of your choice. That makes things VERY visable to even those who have crappy monitors. Dunno what the key above screen 82 signifies, other than the year it was released.

** As you use the erase tool, you will effectively be wiping the color to the new one.

Scooter: I absolutely understand. Notice I'm hinting at its existence, thinking someone (Thomas maybe, who seems to have found the most?), might at least acknowledge finding it?

And Nukey, I did try some color replacements, with some success, but far from total. I'd also come to the conclusion that the boxes left & top don't contain Morse code, but damned if I can figure what they ARE. There doesn't appear to be any duplication?? I don't have my notes here...

Oh, and no, I haven't been looking at the cartridges, but since they were added a couple months after the contest began, I figure they can't be relevent. Of course, they MIGHT have additional clues, but that would be the weak way out, right?

Ascii, then? The boxes appear to contain 8 pixels each (binary)...but I've got no patience to translate them.

I can email the color-fixed map, if you guys want it.

Pixel counts (from the bottom-left working clockwise)...

Note : 0/1 maybe transposed, and I'm not sure of the direction of the bits. But the order is correct.

Russ, just kidding a little bit with you, I have not seen that box code you speak of...

For the number code (since enough of the players have seen it in my opinion...) do some color spilling in the area surrounded by the hidden message that got us in this mess in the first place

This whole contest is becoming a pain in the ascii...but still fun. I think I'll have to take some time away for a while though. I have been having some pretty heavy stress related physical problems the past two weeks, so it looks like a good time to bow out. I know little about braille, nothing about ascii, morse code, semafore flags, whatever the hell codes are in that map. I'll still keep track of this thread, but I can't stare at that map screen anymore...good luck to all.

Me neither...I just laid them out for others to study. I hate riddles. "You're in a room with two friends. All of you have a number on your forehead...how can yo...." Bleeh! Just wipe off your forehead and get new friends.

About 10 minutes. I just used spill and erase, zoomed in 1000% to better see the pixels, and used both the paint screen & post screen at the same time (half n half).

The spacing between boxes I can only assume are spaces between words, so I included those as well.

Yeah, I have a similar list, but on paper. Didn't think to type it in. I noticed while transcribing it that the first "half" are 0xxxxx and the rest 1xxxx generally; or that it seems the series rises. I gave up on the Morse code after some research; after transcribing them all, I suspect it isn't ASCII either.

I will try some color spilling tomorrow maybe...
