2600 Virtual Pets

How 'bout a "Special Ability" meter? Each vp would have a unique ability or something like that for battling and they would have to conserve a bit of energy in order to use it. Just noticed your edit. Is this what "Discipline" would be? Just brainstorming. :)

 

'Discipline' increases strength and stamina, but descreases mood. You use it to teach your vp endurance and self-control. A well discaplined vp will keep doing what it's doing if strength and mood are low instead of whining or falling asleep. 'Play'/'Train' increases strength, health, mood, and stamina, but can only be endured for a period relative to stamina and mood. This makes it important to balance discipline and play.

So far the only actual 'Play' part I have going is a goofy psuedo-3d obstacle cource, the toddler sprite looks funny as hell running through it. You have to run around, duck under, and jump over obstacles to build all your attributes, but everytime you mess up mood decreases. If your vp gets too mad he won't play anymore.

I think a special ability would be a fantastic idea, I'll add a seperate play/training mode for it where you practice your special ability. This will let me squeeze 6 minigames into the cart, two for each growth stage. Those plus the 2player game should hopefully make this a fun cart.

 

edit - I just put together a 'Play' special ability minigame for the toddler stage. It's a simonsayz type game where you can shoot a jewel in four directions, follow the patterns of color/sound to increase mood and special ability. Messing up drops your vp's mood to zero. Any ideas for the baby/youth/adult stage minigames?

 

edit - oops make that 8 minigames, this is gonna be tough (since there are 2 games for baby, toddler, youth, and adult.)

Me, I'd like to see a stock-standard cart using a smallish code for 'storage'. Good luck!

That would probably be better, but the feasibility of a code system depends on how much data needs to be stored. E.g., if we're storing 20 bytes, the code is going to be unbearably long, and I'd go with the memcard. If it's less than, say, 6 bytes, there's no reason to use the memcard. Maybe Mausboy has an idea of exactly how much data needs to be recovered?

With what I have programmed into the "ai" of the vp's so far, it would take 9 bytes to store all the attributes. I'm sure this number will increase though, it seems like the best solution would be the memcard.

Here is a little gif with some of the sprites for the first vp that I've finished so far. I'm not very happy with them, but I'm not an artist. Feedback would be great, but also just wanted to give everyone a little preview.

Thanks :) I'm almost finished with the youth/adult sprites now too.

 

Edit:

I've already scratched my idea on how I'll release these. I'm going to release the first VP in unlimited numbers on cart, then release the other 7 in the first series in a limited edition run, 25 copies of each VP.

When the full first series has been sold, I'll release the first tournament cart, which will be compatible with all series 1 vp's. If these are successful and there is a demand for more, I'll release a second series.

A bit harsh, maybe. But please try to use "your" not "you're". The latter is short for "you are", and I'm sure don't mean "...to Be Able to Burn You Are Own Carts...". You're sure, too, I'm sure. It's not rocket science. And it's "emulator", not "emulater". Finally, sentences end with a full-stop. I won't even stoop to mention your most annoying over-use of capitalised improper nouns, verbs, adjectives, etc.

But yeah, seriously. Capitalizing every single word is just about as annoying as not capitalizing any words. Don't make your 3rd teacher cry when you post, please.

Way to go off-topic to be rude to someone who was offering me the opinions/suggestions I asked for. Proper grammar and puncuation shouldn't be a prerequisite for posting here for three reasons:

 

1 These are things that only bother old people.

2 English isn't even everyone's first language.

3 Atari-related posts are so much more interesting than grammar lessons!

I've been working on a new youth minigame for the first vp. It's a 3d rollerskating game, and I think it's pretty fun. I've also improved the animation a lot; I'm going to be using at least 50 sprites for each vp, I hope I have space for them.

 

What Are The Other Seven Creatures?

And Also How Many K Is This Game Going to Be?

I don't know what the other 7 will be - maybe I will post a poll, and the game will probably be 16k
