How about a lives counter? Like the score counter? Lots of games have lives to keep track of, and you don't even have to use the score counter if you don't want to, so you don't need to use the lives counter.

Some have used playfield blocks as a lives counter, but come to think of it, a lives counter with actual sprites would actually be fairly simple to add if I put it right above the score. I will look into this.
