christianscott27
I'm always on the prowl for a game score, I have a sense for the sound of cartridges in a milk crate waiting for me. Today that leads me to an uncharted corner of my new neighborhood. A little "thrift store" thats not really a store so much as it is some poor haitian bastard selling stuff out of an empty first floor. The guy tapes flyers to the light poles whenever he gets a chance to open up and today I found him. Out front he has the milkcrate full of playstation and NES commons, with random controllers and cords mixed in. Nothing I need here, a thing or two for trade if I feel like dealing with... Whats this? A vectrex manual for SPIKE? I get all excited again, granted I already have 3 vecs at home but this is a bragworthy score if I can find where it came from. I take the manual inside and ask the guy about it, no he doesnt know any vectrex...mm how about a little black TV with a laser game? Oh yes, that thing that goes shoot-shoot dum-dum-dee-dum, SHAINEEE! Wheres that thing you be messing wit all day? The space game. Shainee is a stringpole of a girl about 8 or 10 years old, with some fussing she brings a dusty old vec to the front of the shop. The girl loves this thing a bit too much dont you Shainee? She starts playing the thing on the floor, kicking butt on minestorm. I say here let me help and turn up the brightness knob, she says watch and faces away from the screen, still kicking butt on the unseen space mines. Her dad says make me an offer, is it worth something, gimme a fair price. His daughter looks at him then looks at me, then back at the game. Nah I tell him, if you find some other stuff let me know, I'll be around. Girl you gotta get that thing off my floor take it upstairs will you? Shainee is my new hero. Now, if she had been wearing the "funny helmet that makes it do colors" the story might have ended difrerently, at least for me...
Jess Ragan
When you first said "Shainee" I thought you were using that as a description of the Vectrex! That was really nice of you to let the girl have the system, though. Thanks to you, she's going to grow up with fond memories of a classic game console. I can guarantee you that in another twenty years, she'll be a member of a dying breed of gamers who still understands the significance of the Atari era of gaming. As soon as she gets sick of it, it'll probably end up in the dumpster.
SteveW
That's why you check back in a month. The kid should be tired of it by then.

phaxda
I am so tempted to go over there and check it out--I think I know the store. But I won't; I already have a nice Vectrex and I hope that girl enjoys it as much as I do! Great story.

Thats what I was just thinking, a couple days of Minestorm then back in the milk crate for the Vec, waiting for the next collector to get it for 20 bucks or so. Sorry but I would have jumped on it man.
Osbo
I would have brought it and give it to the girl so it can be hers. That was a nice gesture though.
christianscott27
I'll keep an eye on the place, the console isnt the point for me, I have three already. I'd like to find the carts really, if theres a manual for Spike then it stands to reason there could be a few games floating around there. Its one of those really jumbled heaps of a store, where you cant possibly see what they have for the piles. I doubt the family would ever connect the carts to the vec, when I showed him the manual he seemed to indicate toward a pile of board games. yuppicide
Her father would have just tried to sell it again. If I had another game that I got cheap I'd drop it off for the girl. I would have brought it and give it to the girl so it can be hers. That was a nice gesture though.
