Shawn
Hey All, I hear the O2 A\V mod is pretty simple to do. I looked on google but didn't find anything. Anyone got the schematic for the AV mod? Any other cool stuff that can be done to the O2? I know I'm adding a power LED and some controller ports to it (mines hardwired...for now). Also the controllers are analog, does that mean that to make controllers for it it would be along the lines of needing a "redemption" type box to work with say an NES controller or an Atari controller? Thanks Ahead, Shawn Sr. Edited August 23, 2006 by Shawn Sr.

The O2 controllers are not analog. At least on mine, there's a small connector inside the case; it would probably be a simple matter to wire in a DB9, though admittedly I'm not positive that fire and the directions all use a common ground, etc. it would seem odd for them not to. jsoper
Yes a db9 for an atari joystick is no problem, a genesis controller would have some issues. My website goes more into detail on this.

Good to know. Didn't know for sure about the analog business, I just read about it. I had a look at the inside of the controller and saw the setup but ya never know with some older stuff, I supose it was the grounding ring that led me to lean credit towards the analog idea I read about as it very well could have been a variable resistor, but good to know it's not. Thanks for the info dudes
Shawn
Another quick question, where is a safe spot to draw 5v for an LED? I don't want to leak the voltage out of a spot that needs the current for the unit to function properly. I'll post some pics when it's done. It's looking mighty fine I must say. Front joystick ports. Gold A\V at the back, Gold Coax also. I used the factory hole for the AC to fit a gold plated Female coax connector and where the 2 blank spots are for the (I think) joystick ports on hardwired version that I have is where I put the gold plated audio and video jacks and between them I put the hole for the AC. I also painted the middle of the unit flat black. I would have prefered glossy black but it looks cool none the less.

Shawn
Still gotta dye the white plastic yellow as that is the video jack and I'm gonna paint the sparkle sliver to sparkle gold but I think it turned out pretty good!! jbanes
Good to know. Didn't know for sure about the analog business, I just read about it. Yeah, that's VideoGameCritic. He means to say that the controller feels like an Analog controller. i.e. The design is more along the lines of a CX-10 or C64 joystick rather than the more movement-restricted CX-40 or Proline. I honestly think they're great sticks, with the exception of the "star" used to lock it in a direction. I know the joystick designers weren't expecting a lot of complex movements, but even just changing directions can be a bit clunky at times. I suppose it's a good thing that SF:II-type movements didn't show up until the 90's.
Shawn
You really need to buy a camera. You really need to STFU...j/k... You know I'm poor, give me some slack Yeah, that's VideoGameCritic. He means to say that the controller feels like an Analog controller. i.e. The design is more along the lines of a CX-10 or C64 joystick.. Your right that was where I read it actually!! I was just stoming the google search trying to assimilate as much info as I could about the O2 as it is new waters for me. The joystick isssue it totally fixed now anyhow, I got the DB9 conectors on the front (atari pinout) and I removed all the ressistors and the IC from 2 genny pads so I got a nice set of pads for my O2 now. Speaking of witch, Anyone want a set of working O2 controllers for free? They are the hardwired ones with about 3 feet of factory cord still attached but no ends. Shoot me a PM and they are yours. PacManPlus
Shawn: Great Job! If I should come accross an O2 I will be following in your footsteps with the mod (except maybe for the LED; it was never that important to me). Back in the day, my best friend had an O2 and I had the 2600 (later got the 5200), my brother had the Intellivision and the Vectrex. The O2 is the only one I'm missing now. Drewman21
Yellow Permanite marker in the white jack will work for dyeing it. Do it a few times letting it dry in-between times. Works great.
supercat
Audio output = junction of C45 and R49 Video output = junction of C44 and R7 Ground = pick something close by How does one get the inner metal case open? A 60 watt iron is good enough to remove some of the solder, but I think I'd need a blowtorch to get all the solder joints off the metal box. That's probably not such a good idea, personally I use one of these...
Shawn
Now it's complete. These crusty pics can do it no justice, The gold turned out better than I could ever have hoped it to. Nice and smooth and it really looks like it was ment to be. Overall I think this project was a success.
Lemmi
You really need to buy a camera. im gonna have to agree with him now my $44 walmart camera i bought in 2001 took better pics (and it wasnt even a megapixel camea), it looks like you have the camera in close up mode and stood to far away because the close up pics you took earlier look better i dont know about gold tho, i kinda like the original silver, or maybe dip it in some crome good job on the mod i wouldnt have the patience to work on an o2 system after trying to fix those damn hardwired controllers on mine

That's a crazy pimpin' gold O2 I may do a front/removable joystick mod on one of mine, that would be pretty handy.
Flojomojo
Your next trick should be embedding a multicart inside someplace, while retaining the exterior cartridge slot, a la Flashback 2. Nice mods. I don't care for gold, but it looks smooth and even. The AV and controller ports are terrific!
