jbanes
Sorry about the small size, but is this a CX-10 joystick? Things that I noticed: - The ring is completely dark in color. It could just be worn down or be a different CX-40 model, but it stuck out at me. - I don't see the "Top" indicator anywhere. - There appears to be a recess on top for the hex disk. - There's a mark where the hex disk would have been attached. Of course, it could just be my imagination. Opinions?
the 5th ghost
No, it's not a CX-10 CX-10s do not have a plastic retainer ring around the joystick's boot. Also, if it has the word TOP on it, that's another indicater that it is not a CX-

Foxsolo2000
So what is it then?
jbanes
So what is it then? Obviously a CX-40. Though I'm still kind of curious about the dark ring. Was that a Sears branding thing, did Atari go through a few different shells, or did the color simply wear off?
Foxsolo2000
Although the ring does tend to rub off later CX-40's came in all black. I bought a Jnr back in 91 and it had two black CX-40's in the box with it
+FujiSkunk
So what is it then? Obviously a CX-40. Though I'm still kind of curious about the dark ring. Was that a Sears branding thing, did Atari go through a few different shells, or did the color simply wear off? Sometimes the color wears off, but also Atari's 4-switch "Vader" 2600's came with matching "Vader" joysticks.
ATARIPITBULL
It still could be one of these 2 Atari joysticks, not every one came with the orange paint. :!: :!:
jbanes
Thanks for your help guys! I now feel 150% prepared to spot an actual CX-10 in the wild. Maybe. I'd love to get ahold of a few of those sticks, but I have a feeling that they wouldn't go cheap.

rheffera
Why are CX-40's and CX-10's so brittle...they die so easy...
ATARIPITBULL
I have yet to have an Atari controller go bad on me.
SmileyDude
Doesn't the CX-10 have a different button action than the CX-40? I have a controller where the button is "squishy" instead of the normal feel on all of my other controllers. It also doesn't have Top on it, and I just assumed that all CX-10s had the squishy button. the 5th ghost
Here's my usual foray of pix of what to look for: The one picture shows a comparison of the inner components and how they differ between a CX-10 (on the left) and CX-40 (on the right) Notice the CX-10 has springs on the fire button and directional controls, as well as the lack of the word TOP on the upper half of the joystick body. The picture of the boards just shows the different variants of a CX-10 board, and then the other pictures show the Atari and Sears versions of the HEX disk.
