Room 34
Sure maybe they'll resell them for 10x what they paid, but I still say you're a chump to camp out for two days or more (as I was told some of them had been there) in the cold of November in Minnesota to buy a PS3. If you want it that desperately, it's kind of pathetic. If you're doing it to cash in, it's really pathetic. (Can't get a real job, I guess.) Sorry for being so negative and cynical about all of this. I love video games (obviously). But this whole camping out thing just seems ridiculous, and sad. ninjarabbit
If I understand correctly stores are only going to get a limited distrobution of PS3s, say 8 per store. So let's say there's 30 people camped out at the store, the last 22 people in line are camping out for nothing and have pretty much wasted their time. moycon
Depend on how you look at... making $1000 or more for two days of non-work (basically sitting on your ass) is hard to argue with, don't care how cold it is or how pathetic I'd look. They still make coats and $30 propane space heaters. I'd do it if I wasn't on call...Kick back a couple days, drink some beer, BS with my pals, then turn around, buy about five 360 games, maybe pick up a Wii and stick the rest of the $$$ in the bank for Christmas. Yeah that's crazy aint it? Edited November 17, 2006 by moycon

Yeah that's crazy aint it? Depends on your job I guess, Some days I basically get paid to read and post about games all day. On a hard day, I mix it up with a few hours of real work. Sitting in the cold, even for that much, is a lot harder than my job, and doesn't pay any better when you think about the hours you put in for that $1000. As a matter of fact, for 48 hours of work it pays less than my job. That makes $1000 for sitting in the cold and pissing in a bucket behind a sheet for two days look pretty bad. Room 34
Well said, Atarifever. My wife and I were discussing this today after I had seen those guys at Target, and my thought on it was, I don't care if I'd make more money from selling those PS3's than I'd have made working for those two days (which is true, but NOT if you considered the amount of hours put in waiting in the line). @moycon: Problem with your logic though is that I seriously doubt you'd be able to get away with sitting outside in front of Target with either a propane heater or beers. One last thought (and I say this for Spongebue's benefit): There is only one group of people who could really justify doing this: college students. (And even then, it's marginal, since it would involve cutting a couple days' worth of classes.) Edited November 17, 2006 by Room
neotokeo2001
The PS3 is a must-buy – eventually. But is it worth $600 and a night in a parking lot? Not a chance. Not my words but I couldn't say it better. It is not worth $600 but I am a sucker for new systems. I will be leaving in about 2 hours to pick one up. No waiting in line, No pre-order, No pre-planned attack. But in a little over 3 hours I will be playing mine. msaeger
Yep I saw some in front of the Target in Minnetonka today too. There really is no games I want for it yet anyway so there is no way I would camp out for one.

It's not a problem at all Room 34. Here in GA folks have tents set up, coolers, snacks generators, TVs, Videogame and cars idling they can jump in as they take turns holding the line place. Think camping. Yeah I guess if you have cops or something kicking you every 20 minutes it might not be so fun. Here having a cooler isn't a problem. Personally Atarifever, I don't care how easy your job is, in 20 minutes I will be VPNing in from home and "working" It doesnt matter, I'd still get the same paycheck from my REAL job if I snagged a PS3 the only difference is my weekly income would be + whatever profit I got selling the thing. Red 5
You're all old men ! You know, it might actually be FUN to camp out with a couple of buddies and try to get a system. I used to camp out for concert tickets when I was younger. Sometimes I got tix, sometimes I didn't. In 1996 I camped out for Yankee World Series tickets with a bunch of lunatic Yankee fans. I didn't get them. I had the time of my life. (There was beer. ) I took my younger brother (20 years younger ! ! ! ) to every Harry Potter Midnight release. It was a blast every time. I got my Xbox 360 last year at midnight. I froze my ass off. I played Call of Duty when I got home until 4am. I was a zombie at work. It was freezing cold and a hell of a lot of fun. Why is it a big deal that some young hearty (probably) kids or some young at hearts are camping out for PS3's? It's an adventure. It's a story to tell. Sit in your house and read your newspapers, sip your brandy and complain about the Iraq war and keep saying "Kids these days!" or "fiddle dee dee ! new video games ! bah !" That sounds like fun. Have fun campers ! Hope you get your system in the morning and if not, I hope you had fun trying. And if people are doing it just to turn a buck and they're willing to camp out for it, well, looks like this thread has proven that they earned it. I'm more amazed that people are so annoyed by people camping out for a system than I am that people are actually camping out for a system. 2600Lives
I camped out the night before Star Wars Episode 1 tickets went on sale. As soon as I got off of work, we got some supplies and went to the theater. We were about 250 or so back in line, and within a few hours, about another 500 or so were behind us. It was a BLAST, man. Some dudes pulled up right to where we were sitting and busted out two big coolers of cold beer, which I drank a little too much of, and we were within walking distance of a convenience store. Someone even started BLARING the Star Wars soundtrack through a bad-ass car sound system. The next morning, I got on the news as they were asking people what the thought the new Star Wars was going to be like, and even had a picture of my leg sticking out from under some blankets published in the newspaper (apparently I was snoring rather loudly, and the cameraman decided to snap me alseep like that). It was like a gigantic party, with beer flowing all night and everyone was being cool to each other. Awesome times, man. I never, EVER buy systems new, though. I'll wait till about this time next year before I even consider a PS3.

Room 34
There's definitely a difference, too, in being part of a huge crowd for an event (like World Series tickets), and being amongst a couple of dozen people huddled in front of a Target store in suburban Minneapolis to buy a game console (whether you actually get what you're waiting for or not)! Yes I see what you mean, in my opinion it's much cooler to be out in front of the Target. True story. The day the 360 lauched I took a chance and went to Best Buys. The line there was very long. Tents were set up, sleeping bags everywhere. I went to the back of the line and immeadiately started up a conversation talking about video games (much better than talking about sports IMO but then again I hate watching other people play sports) we figured we probably wouldn't get one since there were so many people in line and one person decided to check out Toys R Us. He drove back and said there was about 8 people hanging out. A few of us decided to try our luck there. I probably waited 3 hours...maybe 4 at Toys R Us before the employees showed up and said they had only 8 units coming in I was like 11 in line. Didn't bother me, I showed up there with nothing but my wallet and a leather jacket. Someone let me use a camp chair and another person gave me a sleeping bag. I met 5 really cool people, 2 chicks and 3 dudes and we pretty much talked about video games the entire time and drank hot cocoa. So I didn't get the unit. Do I feel pathetic? Nope. I had a great time regardless if I got the system. Granted it would have been a lot better had I'd been able to stick it on eBay and doubled my money...but eh. I was on my way home from work anyways (I work 3rd shift and left a few hours early that day) Had I not done that I would have done what I usually do. Went home, ate some cereal and scratched my balls before going to bed. Whats more pathetic. Camping out and mingling with people, engaging in conversation about a subject you love, maybe making a nice profit while doing it or doing what 80% of America does as part of their usual routine? Camping out and cutting up for a day aint so bad...honestly.

In fact many places who will be getting 6 systems for pre orders had maybe 3 people in line waiting then. ... Hubbs & Wiff

Scumdogg
My wife and i saw a pretty huge group of campers in front of our local Target tonight. It's pretty cold here, and has been raining for a couple of days now. We went in, bought a new 360 game, and came home where it's warm. The group looked way too big to be for PS3's, i'm sure about 3/4 of them are going to be pretty angry on the ride home. Angry, and wet. I wouldn't want to be at Target (or ANY store for that matter), when the numbers are released.
