PS3-Jackings...

I have to say, at least they were after the money. I thought someone actually tried to steal a PS3 by shooting someone. At least this shows some forethought (i.e. all those people standing outside have at least $700, much of it in cash). I mean, right away you'd be part of a, maximum, 200,000 person suspect list in all of North America if you stole a PS3. At the city level, you'd be set for a lineup in no time.

Also, I'm kind of glad Jack Thompson won't have this one to hold over us. I mean, the guys doing the robbing were the only ones there not buying videogames.

Oh, he'll just say that these criminals were "training" for the crime by playing GTA, and that it's proof that videogames are too dangerous to be sold in regular stores and should instead be "controlled substances" or some other totally whacked out shit.

The obvious response would be that the PS3 supply is pretty controlled and limited, heck, you have to wait less time to buy a gun, and look where that got us.

That robbery in Englewood OH, that's like 30 minutes from where i live. We were out doing some shopping last night and noticed that the game stores we drove by had cops stationed in the parking lots. That explains that.

As a side note, i'm also starting to hear reports on other boards of a hefty amount of disc-read errors, disc scratchings, and problems with the display in 1080i. Nothing better than getting shot and beaten over a $600 brick. Way to go, humans. Way to go.

The midwest's largest retailer is Nebraska Furniture Mart. There's only two locations but they make a Super Wal Mart look like a Sunglass Hut.

They announced this week that they were refusing to sell the PS3 because of the limited release and surrounding idiocy so they donated their stock (all three) to local charities. That's the first sensible move I've seen in this whole embarassing saga.

Hey, prior to the late 1960's all you had to do was walk into a hardware store, plop some cash on the counter, and walk out with the gun and ammunition.

It would make sense for Sony to gear up production to be able to comfortably meet initial demand rather than creating an artificial shortage.

But, the free advertising and mania is worth more than anything else they could achieve. The guys in marketing are going CRAZY over these news reports.

Anyone who believes that they shipped fewer consoles than they could, is an idiot. They have the same problems Microsoft had when they launched the 360, not enough of a certain part.

Yeah, I would not believe that for a moment, either. It really hurts Sony to have so few PS3's available right now because they are going to get some stiff competition from Microsoft and (especially) Nintendo. Nintendo may have as many as 4 million Wii's out there (most of them in North America) by the end of the year. Sony will be lucky to have a million (and I bet they don't get anywhere near that). Assuming they are losing money on each PS3 (as reported), they will only make money on sales of accessories and (especially) software. If people can't buy the system, people aren't going to buy the software and accessories. Also, developers are going to be reluctant to get on the PS3 bandwagon if Sony can't sell a sufficient number of these systems to make it worthwhile to develop for. I am sure they are busting their tail trying to do everything they can to build PS3s as fast as possible.
