I don't think we'll see a review for this system for a while. The only people with a PS3 "in motion" is USPS.

I saw the PS3 at two different stores today while looking for a Wii kiosk.

 

Honestly? I wasn't impressed. It feels just like the Playstation 2, but with higher resolution graphics. Unfortunately, higher-res graphics don't do much for me. The vehicle and character motions all look and feel like previous generation games, with no major improvements in physics. The racing game in particular (some sort of mud buggy game?) was disappointing. With all the massive parallel processing poower of the PS3, one would expect better mechanical dynamics on the vehicles than we've seen in previous generations.

 

I had heard that the controller in NBA Live can be moved to make the character on the screen do different moves. This is correct. You can get your character to fake and slide a few different directions by moving the controller. Most of the moves feel more like show than anything useful, but they're there*. Beyond that, I was consistently confused by the incredible number of buttons in this game. (The PS3 has 4 front buttons, two thumbsticks, a joypad, four shoulder buttons, AND two triggers! ) It's enough to make one wish for the days of the one button CX-40s.

 

Obviously, a lot of the appeal of the PS3 is going to be in hooking it up to a Dolby Surround Sound system (don't have the speakers) and an HDTV (don't have one) and immersing yourself in the experience. If you're into that sort of thing, I imagine that you'll find it to be pretty cool. If you're looking for a massive leap in gaming over the previous generation, I don't think you're going to find it here. All you're going to find is a same-old, same-old gaming system that takes advantage of your brand new HDTV and stereo system.**

 

* In defense of the PS3's motion tracking capabilties, they were put in at the 11th hour. The developers just didn't have time to build a game around it.

 

** Not that same-old, same-old is a bad thing. If you're already a big fan of the PS2, the PS3 may be the ticket.

What is it exactly that you have against this guys post? Seems pretty straight forward to me. He's asking for a general product review, from somebody whom actually has the product and is using it. So far, all you've done is given directions to a thread about a game review, and bashed the Xbox 360's fan noise. How about a review based on the PS3 itself?

 

Im interested too. So how about a review? And, a review without worrying about the Xbox 360's positives or negatives. Anyone who has a 360 probably doesn't need a review of what they own, and anyone without has no basis for comparison.

 

Maybe includeyour thoughts on:

 

the six axis

the quality of software

the online presentation

the build quality

etc;

It's big. Really big. Well, not quite original XBox big. But given that Japanese consumers didn't like the size of the original XBox, I'm surprised.

 

It's also runs a lot quieter than I expected. That was a pleasant surprise. The touch buttons work better than I expected, and the ports are really easy to get at. Well done.

 

It runs really, really hot. Definitely hotter than the 360.

 

You've probably already heard this, but before you can do anything you have to spend a good half hour downloading and installing a firmware update.

 

The controllers are really light, and I thought I was going to hate them, but truthfully I don't. There are some small improvements that make them better than the original Dual Shock in terms of feel. I like the light buttons. Also, I'm sort of surprised but I don't really mind the lack of rumble, at least not in Resistance. Maybe the high def gives me enough visual indication of where I'm getting hit so that rumble isn't as important as it used to be.

 

One thing really surprised me. The spare controller didn't come with the USB cable you need to plug it into the unit. You either have to share with the one that came with it, or buy another damn cable. At least the cable is pretty standard. It looks exactly like the one I use to sync my phone with my laptop...I'll have to give it a try to see if it works.

 

I happened to have an HDMI cable handy since I accidentally bought the wrong thing to hook up my cable box (apparently I needed a DVI on one end and HDMI on the other). Plenty easy to hook up, looks amazing in HD.

The first thing I noticed when playing the PS3 was how light the controllers are. It must be because of the lack of the rumble mechanism. It feels like the original PS1 pad, but with the analog sticks of the dualshock.

Speaking of controllers, this may be a VERY dumb question but is the controller that comes with the PS3 wireless? I haven't heard if it is or not but got the feeling from a post in this thread (something about a USB cable) that they are not.

Yes, the Sixaxis is wireless. The USB cable is used to charge the controller's internal battery.

If I understand correctly, you can also play over the USB cable if you so choose. Basically, the PS3 sort of combines the wireless and wired controllers in one.

Another nice thing is that almost any USB keyboard or mouse we have thrown at the system, just works, no proprietary crap or anything. Same for USB thumbdrives. I've downloaded the Linux disc and I will try that soon, with a keyboard and a mouse, this thing is more powerful than all the computers in my house combined. I hope NVidia will distribute a nice OpenGL for Linux soon, emulator heaven (maybe even a Wii emulator - LOL).

I am really excited for it now. I can't wait to finally play it. The only thing is that the games that come out in the begining don't utilize all of the power. I think I will wait a year for a price drop and really powerful games. The only thing that could get me to buy sooner would have to be GTA.
