Many of us have finally gotten our pre-orders and Xmas gifts opened and hooked up. We've perhaps adjusted some controller screws and broken them in a little. Played around with organizing meta-data files/renaming roms to match on our (better be Fat32) USB flash drives. You have a beautiful clean carousal full of games and are finally ready to play. As much as I can get obsessed with organizing files, I'd rather be gaming... so:

	What are playing today?

	Find anything new and exciting?

Get a new high score? Share here!

	-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I've tried a lot, but I'll go first with my standouts:

Commando - my god this game looks great but it's hard as hell! I thought I was perhaps suffering because of the Intv controllers, but I switched to my CX78+ and played almost as poorly. The enemies really home-in on you. You are tempted to take it slow but a grenade gets thrown directly on your position if you don't keep moving! I want to get better at this one just because it seems like it should be a quality port.

Atlantis - it's been a while since I've picked up the 2600 version to compare. I love the use of the keypad controller here. Attack from both towers with each side of the controller's buttons. Activate the UFO to fly around. Day and Night Cycles. I bet two players here is a blast (I'd have to read the instructions) as I assume some sort of cooperative play. Just a really awesome game.

ABPA Backgammon - I'm a Backgammon fan and this one is quite fine; I'm shocked it's from 1979! I love the use of the keypad, selecting your dice roll number is so simple its genius. Toggling to your pieces is easy. I'll definitely go back to this one. Beats the 2600 Backgammon which I've always liked.

Turbo - once I realized you use the second controller for some reason this game was an absolute blast. You actually steer the disc, and I thought it felt just great and added to the immersion. Compare this to Enduro on the 2600 and I have to say I think this is superior. It also has a loop with day/night/ice levels etc. Super-fast and thrilling.

I am very new to the Intellivision besides messing around on my Analogue Pocket and/or modded Wii now and again. I never found the solution to the keypad very intuitive or satisfactory on these platforms. The Sprint was appealing to me that I could have a mostly authentic experience with a console I've always been interested in checking out. I am still getting used to these controls but the more I play the better I get at mastering the disc.

Hi everyone, I've been experimenting with some things, trying to see if I could get some features I wanted working on Sprint. This has led to something I call Sprint Boost.

Sprint Boost is a highly modified version of jzintv designed specifically for Sprint. To use it, it requires "replacing" the built in jzintv on the Sprint console, so if this is not something you are comfortable with, then can stop here. With that said, Sprint Boost has a "pass through" mode (default behavior) that simply hands things right back to the standard jzintv. The primary aspect is a config driven approach to adding customizations to the gaming experience.

I am not going to go over everything in this post, I have hosted Sprint Boost here: Sprint Boost Latest

There's also a Wiki with information.

I include a Quick Start setup, basically this has some examples of what I call "boosted" games (NOTE: this is not modified roms, Sprint Boost works with existing intv roms). I recommend you start with these examples so you can try things out. The Quick start zip file contains both the update.zip file to load Sprint Boost on the Sprint (via normal update process), as well as folder called "boosted" that contains the examples that you put on your side load USB. NOTE: You must provide the Rom files (I did not include them), just name them appropriately to the other game files.

DISCLAIMER: I used the word experiment above, that may be an apt description. I am going to call this beta, but I feel it is at a place where I can share it.

If anyone bothers to try this out, I would love to hear feedback. I am curious if people feel the in-game performance is acceptable on boosted games. A tip for those that jump right in. Pause is mapped to 5 + Lower Right Action. And holding the two lower action buttons at the same time is another main trigger.

One last thing: Thanks to this entire community, my examples use some of the art and assets shared here, along with other key knowledge.

This is a wild idea for a next project for the sprint. Would there be a way to change the internal front end menu structure and have drop down sections to reduce the 45 games having to be scrolled through. I think it might be able to be accomplished with a Networked solution to access the internal file structure. I still am stumbling on setting that up, with all the cryptic posts that I have read through. could someone possibly post a solution, and maybe some update files to help me along?

I will stop here and wait for replies from the house.

Mod Package (Supports the 1.2 (REV2) Alpha Update)

Sprint Software Mod (Compatible with Update 1.2 (REV2) Alpha)

I’ve created a Sprint software mod that enables some really powerful features. It was originally built for my personal use, but I thought others might find it valuable as well.

	Two Versions Available

Just copy the contents of the version you choose into the root of your USB drive.

	1) Mod Launcher (Non-Permanent)

 Does not modify your system

Runs entirely from RAM and your USB drive

 Nothing is permanently changed

	2) Permanent Loader (Perm Loader)

On first run, it makes system-level modifications

On second run, it restores the system back to stock

A firmware update will automatically remove the loader

After a system update, running it again will apply the modifications again

Note: These packages do not include
jzintv
or the frontend. They use the versions already installed on your system.

	What This Adds

Automatically loads a KBD (keyboard hack) or PLT (palette) file if one matches the ROM name

Applies a global reset keyboard hack if no game-specific KBD file exists

 Automatically adds
-v1
(Intellivoice support)

Detects JLP save support by checking the ROM’s
.cfg
file

If JLP is enabled, savegames are turned on

 If not, savegames remain off

Adds a small global startup delay (currently 0.1s) to ensure proper audio initialization

This can be adjusted in the included
jzintv
package

Likely unnecessary in future firmware versions

Enables networking if using the Amazon Basics Ethernet adapter (others may work)

 Adds RetroArch support

Follow the folder structure included on the USB

 Rename files by adding
.rom
(example:
game.d64
→
game.d64.rom
)

Place them in the appropriate folder

Controller mapping may require additional setup

Fixes bug with TutorVision not working on 1.2 - To enable this make sure your TutorVision roms have "TuturVision" in the name

Added Manual Support Created by @big_guitar

	Why I Built This

For me, this eliminated nearly all of the custom
jzextra
configuration work I previously had to do. It streamlines the experience and makes everything feel seamless.

	Testing & Safety

 Tested on multiple Sprint units

Easy to undo — simply apply a system update

wipe_all
will also remove modifications if needed

	Mac Users

There are directories with . before them that are added. You may not see these and need to unhide hidden files to use this!

Examples: .mods / .retroarch / .permupdate

	Important Notes

Do not run the Mod Launcher and the Permanent Loader during the same session.
Doing so will likely cause conflicts and may require a firmware update to restore functionality.

There are likely bugs. If you find any, feel free to share them.

 Use at your own risk.
If something breaks, that responsibility is yours. Consider this an alpha release.

Support will be provided at my discretion and may be limited.

Thanks for anyone that helped in making this possible!

Hope you enjoy it. I genuinely can’t imagine using my Sprint without this — it makes the experience dramatically better.

Anyone experiencing random crashes or reboots? Happens when playing a game - the screen goes blank and the console reboots back to the blue Sprint screen, then loads normally.

- Console has the Day One firmware update applied

	- Tried multiple power supplies and cables (rated for 2A or higher)

	- Happens with or without USB stick installed. Crashed while playing Night Stalker without any USB connected. Also crashed playing D&D on USB stick.

I had this console a little over a month now so I'm likely past my return window. I've been troubleshooting for a while to eliminate any external issues (like USB sticks or power supplies). I'd appreciate any other advice or troubleshooting tips I might have missed.

Thanks!

IMPORTANT: THIS IS NOT A PDF VIEWER! This tool is for viewing PNG files.

As always, use at your own risk. Watch the video to see the examples.

	Installation:

Within the 'manualview.zip' file, use the included update.zip file to update your Sprint. This will add less that 16KB to your device

Unzip the "usb-data.zip" file to deploy the included examples to your USB drive.

With the above steps completed, and your updated USB drive in the Sprint, test the examples. Let me know if you encounter any issues. See the "Usage" information below.

 manual-viewer-demo.mp4

	Usage:

Convert individual PDF pages to PNG files if necessary. For best results, keep the image height at a maximum of 720 pixels. The application will upscale smaller files.
To note, many manuals only have a few colors, so you should reduce color depth wherever possible to keep the file sizes down. See the examples.

Copy an example ".rom" and ".json" file among one of the three examples.
Change the prefix names for the manual you want to establish. Edit the JSON for displaying the name of the manual. Do not edit the "jzintv_extra" that should remain the same.

Create a subfolder at the location based on the prefix of your rom name, with a preceding "." and a trailing "_docs".
For example,

You're creating a manual entry for "PGA Golf" (where the rom name will be "PGA Golf.rom")

Create a new folder at that location called ".PGA Golf_docs"; The leading period will prevent the folder from displaying in the Sprint menu

Copy your PNG files for PGA Golf into that "docs" subfolder (up to 30 images maximum at this time)

Other Notes: No, you don't have to keep the navigation instructions in "docs" folder. The program will only display images that exist in the "docs" folder for that manual. If there are no images in folder, or if the proper subfolder does not exist, nothing will happen, and it will return to the Sprint menu. Try to keep file sizes down.

	Good morning all,

I am starting to run out of steam tracking and requesting shutdowns of all “pirates” who are taking my property and either selling it / sharing it / distributing it or counterfeiting it.

between ROMs being passes around, or sold by people on eBay or their websites, to now my overlays being printed using my supplied files and being sold on websites. This is all affecting my VERY SMALL business.

I do this for the love of intellivision, but I am not doing this to lose money (or simply break even) or to consistently take precious time away from my family, friends and kids. I do have an unrelated professional full time Dayjob as well.

This week has made me seriously re-think offering digital media. Either stop providing any artwork (digital packages) or even stop offering ROMs all together.

I literally just invested a few thousand dollars this month in equipment and materials to start mass producing overlays, manuals and other items that the Sprint community would love to have (and have been asking me for) just to wake up and see people using my artwork to counterfeit my material and place them for sale on their websites.

Of note - yes, my artwork costs money. I spent money hiring a graphic artist to generate box art and overlay art. Manuals as well were expensive to hire someone to put them together (verbiage and artwork). This all costs money and is an investment for me. I really do love offering the digital files and giving people a great product and give them exactly what they want and deserve (but not at the cost of me losing money).

I ask this community to help support me, my business and my fellow Intellivision publishers. My website is very intelligent where it keeps track of who buys what & when, and keeps it all in a searchable SQL database. I can easily check to see what items a customer has purchased in the past.
I watch YouTube videos and posts either in here or Facebook groups and I very often see people having things that they shouldn’t have from my library. They never purchase those titles from me (and I am the ONLY distributor of them)

it’s very frustrating & disheartening from our small community.

Nothing is changing at the moment on my website, but I wanted to bring this issue up with everyone. If this behaviour continues, I will for sure stop offering digital services and go strictly physical (my boards cannot be dumped by any means).

I love this community and hope we can all play nice in the sandbox together.

Posting this in both the Sprint area and the regular intellivision area so everyone is aware.

Please continue to support purchases of my materials ONLY from my website. There are NO other authorized resellers of Intellivision Collector materials.

For the counterfitters / re-sellers out there, please refrain, you are going to kill this community and deprive them of what makes the Sprint great - receiving any future fantastic games!

	Intellivision Sprint - Cartridge Player

This goes back to the announcement of the Sprint and is something I’ve fiddled about with since the early speculation about a USB add-on that would play original cartridges:

I call it the "Cartridge Player" and it does three things:

Plays original Intellivision Cartridges* on the Sprint

Acts as a ROM-dumper* (with USB mass-storage access to the dumped ROM)

Mounts flash-storage (acts like a USB drive) from (my) replica Intellivision Cartridges

I have this built and working (tested with most of the OG 125).

This post/thread is about seeing whether it is worth the time to flesh this out into something that can be sensibly offered to others. And, if so, in what form?

Form could range from a finished product to just sharing the files as-is, with several options in between. All have their challenges from a viability perspective, which I expect we'll get into if there is any interest in the first place.

So, before getting into details, or taking it further, I’d like to know:

Who’d realistically be interested in this?

If you were buying it as a finished product, around what price?

If given the files as-is (see below), would/could you assemble your own?

I'll need answers to the first and either 2nd or 3rd questions here for it to be useful in figuring out next steps ...

Note that, for various reasons, I’ve not decided if I want to release this at all, yet.

I’ll probably do a flash-drive reader type version regardless (which is really just a bit of nostalgic fun), but this is about the actual cartridge reader/player.

	---

	Usage/Behavior

Usage is easy. Plug it into your Sprint via USB. Power on the Sprint. Insert an Intellivision Cartridge and you’ll see this (all five images just launch the inserted cartridge):

If you select “Show Controls”, you’ll see this:

Remove the cartridge and the Sprint will go back to its built-in carousel.

Insert one of my flash-based, replica, cartridges and it’ll behave just like it was a USB flash drive, so you can have your full Sprint build on there, in cartridge form, if you wish.

Using normal USB flash drives with the Sprint is unaffected. And NO changes to the Sprint firmware or configuration are required.

As-is, i.e. if I just gave you a schematic, STLs and a parts list, you'll need to print the plastic parts, create your own PCB (from my schematic) for the "dumper" add-on to an Arduino Nano ESP32 board, order parts from several vendors, do fine-pitch SMT assembly/soldering, setup Arduino and ESP32 build/programming chains, flash the unit, and then put it all together - without a step-by-step tutorial.

One interim-option is that I create a single PCB/assembly you can order pre-populated (from JLCPCB or PCBWay etc.) and that you only have to make external, through-hole, connections to, another is I write up detailed build instructions and pre-build BoM order sheet "projects" for Mouser or Digi-Key, but this is all dependent on level of interest due to the amount of work that entails.

I have no sound when I start a game. After a while (maybe 1 minute) the sound is fading slowly in and then the sound is as loud as in the menu GUI. I use a HDMI to HDMi mini cable as my 16" Portable Monitor (LC-Power LC-M16-FHD-60-P) only has a HDMI mini slot.

As the Sprint has hardware capabilities that far exceed the original Intellivision, but lacks the power of a modern PC, there is likely some sort of middle ground of what a game specifically designed to use all of the Sprint's capabilities could offer. I believe Sprint uses a Linux operating system and has 256Meg of RAM. There are software development kits that are for Linux. Current game engines, like Unity, Unreal, or Godot are too big to run directly on the Sprint. However, perhaps it is possible make a game on a Linux pc using Unity, for example, and then install just the game onto the Sprint. What I'm thinking may be possible is a hybrid game that uses Intellivision graphics and sound for part of the game and also have cut scenes using something like Unity. If the modern game engines are too advanced for the Sprint, there may be something older that is Linux compatible which would work.

Hey. I opened the Sprint today (for Xmas) and it seems like controller 1 is faulty. The bottom most position on the disc does not seem to work (or is really slow to respond). I first noticed in Shark Shark when trying to move down on the screen. I then tried Frog Bog on easy mode where you just have to press the disc. I can press on the bottom direction of the dis and the frog does not jump. If I try it on the 2nd controller it is fine. Also moving the disc slightly left or right then the frog will jump.

I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts on the feasibility of game developers providing games for the Sprint that included DRM (Digital Rights Management) onto a release. As I understand it, most homebrew game developers for Intellivision release their titles on a cart (cartridge), which can be played on a classic Intellivision console and is difficult to copy. This gives the software developer some protection against piracy. Since the Sprint does not have a cartridge port, that leaves homebrew developers to only being able to supply games on USB or as a download for the user to put on a USB. Since the Sprint does not have an internet connection, the game developer cannot rely on a DRM solution that uses the Internet to verify a license key. As far as I know, there is no encryption based DRM solution built into the Sprint to be compatible with DRM encrypted files. So, if a game developer wanted to sell games on the Sprint and wanted piracy protection, what would they do?

	Hey everyone,

I ran into a problem and figured I’d share my solution in case it helps others.

I own 3 Intellivision Sprints, and keeping the game libraries updated across all of them was becoming a hassle. Every time I added or changed something, I had to manually update the USB stick on each device.

So I built a solution I’m calling “NetworK”

What it does:
Instead of relying on USB drives, each Sprint mounts a network share that acts just like local storage. Now I can manage all my games in one central location, and the changes instantly reflect across all devices.

Why this is useful:

 No more swapping USB drives

One place to manage your entire library

Instant updates across all the systems in my home

	Required Things:

Network Adapter (I use the Amazon Basic 3.0 Adapter)

A place on your network to store your games in the same format as the USB Stick

A file server setup (I use NFS as its natively supported by the sprint)

A script for the Sprint to mount your NFS drive (Mine mounts to /userdata/roms/network)

I put together a quick demo showing how it works (No USB is Connected)

This is a ROM version (Intellivision Sprint files included) of the "Joe's Color Test" image (Colors_New.png) that was included with Joe Zbiciak's EXCELLENT jzIntv Intellivision emulator, and was created using the IntyColor and IntyBASIC utilities from the original image. Fast and simple, it is useful for displaying custom palettes on the Intellivision Sprint, or any Intellivision emulator (or, if you are easily amused... LIKE ME)!

	Let's assume the following:

	- No further builds are coming from Atari (test or otherwise)

	- Atari releases all the source code changes as required by license

Given the current binary build is severely lacking in the aspect ratio/border department, would it be possible for folks in the community to make the build we're all hoping for, leveraging the Atari changes (for reset, et al) and the Raspberry Pi changes (to make the screen look correct or at least authentic to how it was back in the day) to produce a 'final' best-of binary that we can then apply via custom update?

I just have a bad feeling given some of the last comments made by Ben that Plaion is under heavy pressure to move on from further (software) development for the Sprint in favor of new (and thus revenue-generating) products.

Wow. Just.... wow. What a time to be alive.

I'm an OG Intellivsion (and then Intellivsion 2) user from the early 80s. I'm old.

My first "console" game was Pong (Seleco from Sears, thanks, mom and dad), and then I played Adventure (black and white TV) at a buddy's house.

Then I got the Intellivsion (and later a Commodore 64).

I did dabble in Emulators back in the day, but never got the hang of it. I'm so excited to be here in this community. First thing I did was get my old AD&D bin file and played that. Awesome. Now my goal is Burgertime and Microsurgeon.
Huge shout-out to Weeds, someone I've known for a long time and he's also on the forum... somewhere.

So thrilled to have this plugged into a 65" TV downstairs. Just... awesome. Anyways, Hello everyone!

And for ease of managing folders, and game metadata in general, there is Sprint Game Manager by Evets17: https://forums.atariage.com/topic/386818-sprint-game-manager-update-11-enhancements/
Back to the original post:
-----

I realized the "color palettes" thread may have been where folders were announced/discovered, but really needs its own thread. So here are my folder icons generated so far. (Yes, Google Gemini created these from photos of existing boxes.)
They're not perfect (at times, the "generate a collage from the images provided" it seemed to just make up similar images, rather than using the ones provided, for example.) But they'll do for me for now.

If you're curious to try it yourself, or with a different LLM, here was my basic prompt, I then attached images of each game's box from the chosen network/publisher. Obviously, I changed the text as needed per network/publisher, and had to be more specific with the third-party publishers to describe their box format properly:

Generate an image of the box for a generic Intellivision game, in the style of the original Mattel Electronics boxes. The border of the box should be red, like the "Action Network" game boxes. The center of the box which should have an image representative of the game should instead be a collage of the center images of the following attached images. Where the game title should be should read "ACTION NETWORK".

Here was the prompt for Imagic, for example:

Next is a game box for Intellivision games by Imagic. The box should appear to be a silvery background, with the black "IMAGIC" logo at the top. Beneath that should be a blue band with "IMAGIC" in block white print, and below that lines of green, yellow, orange, and red in decreasing thickness. Below that the artwork. In this case, make the artwork a collage of some or all of the attached. These should also be used as a basis for the surrounding portion. Again, the white block text at the top should say "IMAGIC", not an individual game name.

(It *REALLY* wanted to make the Activision one use one of the game names, instead of "Activision," so I had to add some emphasis.)
I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong or if there are files on this jump drive causing this. I have all these games on here with the metadata. And they all work. But for every game there is also these blank looking icons with names on them. They don’t boot up a game when I click on them but they are just there. I don’t see any files on the drive starting with an underscore in their name.

Even though my Sprint sits there for a day or so not being being used but connected to a power outlet
when I turn on the power outlet in the morning the controllers light up red ( charging ) then after an hour
or so the red lights go off.
Why are they charging everyday even though not being used.

	Hey!

I was able to get an Intellivision Sprint and was excited to try out a bunch of homebrews. Dragon Quest was probably the biggest one, but I am not seeing the ability to purchase the ROM anymore. Was the game discontinued?

I was thinking of some of the games that either didn't have box images... some of the games that were loose became part of Anthology series... and other games had boxes that were eventually made for them to be sold on websites

Some of those games were originally posted on this forum ages ago for free, and who knew how many years later they would become part of the Sprint. So I made a few over the years that were posted here, but never used. Just thought I'd offer them up if anyone wants to use them...

And of course... post your own as well! Let's see 'em!

PS.. these are meant to be your artwork, and not pre-existing boxes.

Here is one for TV Powww... using the Action Network colors, and bringing back that old CRT feeling we once had. TV Powww was known as TVPixxx in the NY/Tr-State area on Channel 11 WPIX. It would come on the same time-frame as TVPowww and was my first visual introduction to Intellivsion games. Ohh.. what was that? Football?? Soccer?? Wish those were included in the ROM other than Sharp Shot.

Since the wireless controllers for the Sprint are new, I figured that they deserve their own thread instead of this good information getting lost in that big general discussion thread.

The disc mechanics of the Sprint controller are completely different to the original.

The development process was very similar to when we brought the CX40 back with the 2600+.

I vividly remember during early r&d for the new machines opening up both original CX40 and the Intellivision controllers. My initial thought for both was wtf is this - fascinating designs. The original CX40 with the metal domes and the Intellivision with its multi leveled membranes, wow.

Thing is in my role I have to think about modern manufacture processes to ensure optimal cost of goods and product longevity... We need the products to work for as long as possible to minimize returns.

In the case of the CX40+ we moved to a modern industry standard of silicone elastomers onto PCB contacts. I was wary of this move away from the original design, but in testing, personally I found the feel of the original joystick directional presses and our new CX40+ design to be basically the same. So we went with it. Fortunately the response from the market was positive, returns of the new CX40+ are basically zero and we've continued to sell them and add different versions.

It's the same for the Intellivision Sprint controllers. Wholley new disc mechanics but with the overriding intention of having the same feel and performance of the original.

I can tear one down next week and post some images of what we have done.
