The SIO2SD is mounted on three 30mm M3 hexagonal steel pillars screwed directly into the 800XL's motherboard. This means the unit is entirely separate from the casing and can indeed be used with the lid off. The LCD is steadied with an M3 screw going through to one of the pillars in the top right corner.
