An easy way to check is to search GameFaqs and see what systems come up. I did a search for Shanghai and came up with NES, SNES, TG-16, SMS and others. I think their database includes Japanese versions, though.

Viking Child also came out on the ST and Amiga as Prophecy 1: The Viking Child.

Shanghai and Switchblade 2 also came out on the ST and Amiga.

Conquest of Zow :? - This is not a Lynx game I have ever heard of!

Pinball Jam is a conversion of 2 real Bally/Midway pinball machines.

Turbo Sub was Lynx only.

Chip's Challenge was also released on the ST and Amiga

Gauntlet 3 is not the same as the other versions and nor is NFL Football, Batman Returns or Bill & Ted

Hockey also came out on the Megadrive(Genesis) as Mario Lemieux Hockey

Battlezone came out on the 2600, XL/XE, ST and was also an arcade game but the Lynx version is updated.

Rygar is the same as the arcade and many home conversions.

Scrapyard Dog is the same as the 7800

Ninja Gaiden came out on just about everything and is also known as Shadow Warriors on the home computers.

Super Asteroids & Missile Command are not the same as any other versions (vastly updated) but are based on the arcade originals.

Your question doesn't always have an obvious answer, since other platforms do have Battlezone, Asteroids, Othello, Tetris, etc., yet the Lynx versions are either clones or unique ports which do not share a common feature set with other versions. So for example, Super Missile Command is quite different than 2600 Missile Command. Battlezone (even the non-easter egg version) is really different with its mission style of gameplay.

Then, on the flip side, you have a game like Joust which is clearly an arcade port (and a very good one at that), but includes a head-to-head "gladiator" mode not found in any other port that I'm aware of. So does this make Joust on the Lynx exclusive? Or what about Gauntlet 3? This was originally a non-Gauntlet game developed by Epyx exclusively for the Lynx, but Atari rebranded it as Gauntlet for publication. Is it therefore exclusive?

So, do you want an exclusive "title" not available elsewhere (but there might be similar gameplay elsewhere), or do you want to know that the port of the game has some unique features not found elsewhere? :)

BTW check out my Songbird site if you haven't heard of a lot of these games.

If the game is playable in other platform, but the Lynx version is, while identical in gameplay, worse/better/has extra modes, it will be not exclusive (Like Battlezone, for example, or Lemmings). Of course, that features would be explained if they exist (like the Easter Egg that I forgot).

Exclusive ones are games that you can only play on the Lynx. While you can play Gauntlet in its core in a lot of systems, you can´t play that version if it´s not with a Lynx. I hope you understand me.

Chip's Challenge was also released on the ST and Amiga

...as well as on the PC (DOS) with lovely EGA graphics and featuring an AdLib soundtrack by David Whittaker which can be downloaded from the AdLib music archive. ;)

While we're on the subject, here's a funny short story about the Lynx version of Chip's Challenge:

A couple of years ago, I was dating a girl who whose ex-boyfriend had been BIG into videogames. He had at one point introduced her to Chip's Challenge, a game which she had nothing but great things to say about. Since her experiences with the game had been limited to a stuffy Windows 3.1 version (blech!) of the game, I tried to surprised her one afternoon by brandishing a Lynx loaded with its much better port of this great game. Her responce? "Is it Chip's Challenge? Oh. Yeah." She played it for a few minutes, just to appease me, before handing the system back to me, never to touch it again. I guess, regardless of its awesomeness, the Lynx can't win everyone over.

I didn't see STUN Runner in any of the lists. It isn't an exclusive (apparently it saw release on quite a few platforms in Europe back in the day).

What other platforms was Stun Runner released for? I was only aware of the arcade game and the Lynx version. I thought that recently was the first release of the game for anything else when it became available on Midway Arcare Treasures 3. That was for PS2, Xbox, and Cube.

edit: I just answered my own question with a quick google. It came out for the Amiga, Amstrad CPC, Atari ST, Commodore 64, DOS, Lynx, ZX Spectrum. I am amazed. Can't seem to understand how I missed it. I have loved this game for years on the Lynx and at the arcades. Though you can't find it in the arcades any more.

  • 2 weeks later...

They seem pretty similar too me whats different? I have never played them that much I hate platformers.

7800 SD is a pretty ordinary platformer with decent graphics. Lynx SD retains the gaming characters but places them in a new (and dramatically expanded) gaming environment. While the games share similar themes ("junkyard", "city") and enemies, gameplay is radically different.

7800 SD, despite its overall attractiveness, is tricksy and difficult and simply not to my taste. Lynx SD, is, on the other hand, completely awesome, and its innumerable hidden bonuses, mini-games, and powerups has kept me entertained for over 14 years. Love it!

More:

1. P.I.T.S., while not a game, is certainly unique, and should be on that list.

2. Was EOTB released for any other system?

3. Centipede (proto) has a Millipedesque move zone and other features not found in other versions of the game. Does this make it unique?

4. Lynx Reloaded has two minigames -- they both should be on that list.

5. STUN Runner's 3D effect is achieved by using scaled sprites on the Lynx, if I recall. Is this unique amongst gaming systems?

For STUN Runner, maybe; I imagine on other systems, the programmers used character/tile graphics or similar trickery to achieve the 3D affect. That's kind of a stretch to call a game "unique," though.

The Lynx itself is not unique in offering that level of hardware-based sprite scaling, however. The 32X comes to mind, with Space Harrier and After Burner as the best examples.

Well, I understand that the Lynx community would want to have as most games as possible in the Lynx library, but I´m not going to include demos/protos for the sake of it, I hope you can understand that.

That´s why I´ve added a new category: Non-games, Homebrew and others, where I´ll put all of the non-games, or games programmed by a small company (as stated by Atariage itself).

Maybe I´ll add a small protos section if someone can give me enough info.
