Planet Bob - Playing Starflight (Genesis)

Hi there!

As requested by Bob, I'm playing the Genesis version of Starflight:

So, is it an RPG? I'm not sure. That's what they considered it in my "Happy Computer" mags back in the day. I think it's something like "Pirates! in Space", spiced up with a scavenger hunt. Of course, when it came out in 1986, Pirates! didn't even exist ;)

Lemon64 has it sorted into "Simulation, Space" - when it was my descission I'd have it put under "Adventure, Miscellaneous" :lol:

At first I was unsure which version to play. The original MS-DOS one? The improved Amiga version? The C64 version, because that's my fav. computer? Well, I ended up with the Genesis version, first because that's hopefully the latest and therefore greatest version and second because Bob said he was currently into Genesis games.

Starting into the game, my first tasks today were learning the controls (which aren't that complicated with just 3 buttons ;)), creating a crew and equipping the ship. Then I tried making some money by searching for minerals in the first planet of my home system.

When I had improved my crew and the ship some, I started a few journeys to nearby planets, where I also met the first Aliens :-o

One were particular funny, some slimy blobs calling themselves "Spemins".

I learned tons of things and gathered a lot of info so far:

(I'm tempted to say that it sucks, when a game forces you to make notes like that...)

- Avoid the area of Space Coordinates 135,84
 (Lost contact with two other ships there!)

- Ruins of old empire 17N 162E on 2nd planet of neighboring system.
=> 16S 20W Planet 4 system 118,146 demand of Hyper-Triticale
	=> 68, 66 Stolen Autotracking device

- Alien activity in system 175,94
 => Surviving Colonists on 1st planet 22N 97W

- Ancient ruin in Nebula near Spemin home planet (82,148)

- Secret way into Ulek territory: 106,139 64,186 35,186

- Great Egg at 192, 152...

- Fluxes:
128, 105	=> 146,112
12, 87	  => 173,88
148, 166	=> 170, 93
99,82	   => 118, 107

The "flux" things are simply wormholes, as todays games would call them. Just hyperspeed shortcuts.

As you can see from the other info, there's several threads, or better scavanger hunts, some I already started following.

I'm also already in control of some kind of droid race called mechans :)

Pretty interesting game so far, though the constant need to collect and sell minerals is getting a bit tiresome. I wish I already had all equipment on the highest level and would find some cheaper source for fuel...
