Lord Thag
Hi all. I've been trying to play mercenary on my Atari. As the disks I have do not work, I'm forced to use a ROM image. Problem is, all the different ones I can fine do not work when loaded (over SIO2USB/APE). The game tweaks out and freezes when I try and take off in the first ship. Any ideas? Anyone know where I can get a working ROM or some replacement disks? This game looks quite fun, and I can't play it. Damn you ancient floppies! +remowilliams
Atarimania has the VAPI image of Mercenary, you should be able to load it through APE and play the original copy protected version.
Lord Thag
I tried the one from Atarimania, alas. After I buy the first ship just after landing and board it, the game hangs on any press of a speed key (garbled screen graphics). It does this on both my 800xl and my 1200xl. Any idea why? Are there any other ROM sets on the net other than Atarimania and fandal? Neither of 'em work. Anyone have any clue as to why?
+remowilliams
Hmm... not sure. I'll attach two of my own images here, one VAPI and one PRO. Mercenary.zip Mercenary.zip
Lord Thag
Thanks, very much obliged. I'm new to using roms and APE though. How do I get APE to load these .atx files? They do nopt even show up in my file list? Or am I just being blind and/or dense?

No it's not just you You won't see the option for .ATX support until you download the VAPI DLL and place it in the same folder as APE. A registered version of APE is required I believe. .ATX (VAPI) images contain all the original data plus advanced copy protection imaging capability, which makes them super cool! One caveat is that using APE you cannot write to .ATX images, but IIRC Mercenary uses a save disk and not the original.
Lord Thag
Well, hopefully my copy of APE shows up tomorrow. Thanks again for the help! I'm looking forward to playing this.
www.atarimania.com
Not quite sure about this but the releases may be zone-specific. It's possible the original Novagen version only works on PAL systems. -- Atari Frog http://www.atarimania.com
