How do I make the bent arrow character on the 800XL?

I've tried pressing control with all of the letter and number keys which make those shaped characters, but none of them made the bent arrow.

Press Escape, then shift-< (Clear)

for positive bent character ("clear") press ESC once and then SHIFT or CONTROL + Clear (HOME on the emu)

 

for negative one ("beep") - press ESC once and then CONTROL + 2

To get the Control Characters printable in a string, press ESC 3 times then the control sequence.

NOTE: you didn't mention if the bent arrow is normal or inverse. An inverse bent arrow is the bell character (ctrl-2). When printed, it rings the keyboard speaker.

 

BTW a keystroke chart is printed on the back of the Atari Basic reference manual. If you don't have one, here's a list:
