graywest
Hey everyone, One of my first memories of Atari computers when I was a wee lad was of a program called "cruel.exe". I had just gotten an 800xl for Christmas with a few cart games. My mom's friend gave us a bunch of pirated disks to use with the new disk drive. There were a lot of different games and demos on these disks. My parents showed me how to boot the disks, then left to go on a walk. I played a couple of games, then came across this program called cruel.exe. Booted it up, and it asked me to type in my name. As soon as I hit the first letter, the screen started flashing garbage characters and making loud siren sounds! Scared the crap out of me. I actually ran out of the room, down the street, found my parents and told them that I broke the computer. Anyway, they came back and had a good laugh when they found out that it was just a programmer's joke. I was just wondering... does anyone have a copy of this program? I checked Atarimania and couldn't find anything. Thanks for the help.
miker
Hi! I don't really know what it was. But I've found a "nice tool" called Paperweight 3.1 which seems to do something similar. It may apear somewhere as Destroy Demo, too! Have fun! paperw31.zip

dinosaur
I remember when that came out in A.N.A.L.O.G. (after the ST appeared) and 8 bitters thought it was real and were PISSED OFF! Generated quite a few letters to the editor!
Big_Mo
Hey everyone, One of my first memories of Atari computers when I was a wee lad was of a program called "cruel.exe". It's actually called CRUELIO.BAS, and was on the ANTIC monthly disc for October 1984... Attached! graywest
Yeah, I was probably seven years old at the time. I had forgotten that the screen flashes "DANGER!" too, which didn't help matters any.
