Is there a list floating around on the Internet showing compatibility for the various games, particularly cartridge format, for the 8-bit Ataris? I have a 600XL, so I figure most carts will work okay - but some of the older carts only work with the 400/800, while I think there are a few others that require more than 16 KB.
