Rybags
It needs special software. You should be able to read the tablet in BASIC. The X/Y position should be returned on PADDLE(0) and PADDLE(1). Fairly sure Koala Paint works with touch tablets.
mimo
The Cart that shipped with the CX-77 was Atari Artist http://www.atariage.com/software_page.html?SoftwareID=3762 unless you can get it cheap, don't bother IMO
Rik
So theres no way of checking that it works okay without the software?I really dont want to sell someone a non-working touch tablet, thats if the required software is too expensive or hard to find. charliecron
Urchlay did a file version of this not too long ago, you can find it in this thread... http://www.atariage.com/forums/index.php?s...hl=atari+artist Charlie
Rybags
You can quickly verify if it works in BASIC. 10 ? PADDLE(0),PADDLE(1),STRIG(0);" ";PTRIG(0);" ";PTRIG(1) 20 GOTO

Rybags
The real cart should work on any machine. And, there's 97.5% that the ROM has been cracked and converted, so there should be a downloadable binary that'll work on 48K or higher machines from disk. HAHAHAHA... Well, when you first plug it into the ATARI 400, you should see a little message come up on the screen that says,"ATARI OS has found new hardware." Followed by a second message that says "CX-77 Touch Tablet" And then a final message that says "Your new hardware is now installed and ready to use." IF not, you need to insert the driver disc.. But since the ATARI 400 has no CD drive, you may need to use a hammer to get it to insert correctly.. Oh.. also... If you want the "light up screen" to work on the CX 77, you have to take 4 hits of acid, and then plug it into the electrical outlet, instead of your ATARI joystick port.. MEtalGuy66
Ok.. I apologize for being such a smart-ass.. But that was hilarious.. IF you have an Atari 400, and you want to use the CX-77 touch tablet with it, you are going to have to find the Atari artist cartridge, and be sure the program options are set to use Touch tablet istead of Joystick.. You can then draw on the surface of the touchpad with the stylus, and it will appear on the normal atari screen. There is no "screen" in the touchtablet, itself. However, if you want to DRAW DIRECTLY on the atari's screen, you may consider buying the atari light pen. The CX-77 is good for "tracing" things that are already drawn/printed on paper.. The ATARI 400 only comes with 16k of RAM.. upgradeable to 48k... IF you get an ATARI with 64k (or more) memory, there are alot more programs that support the CX-77 touch tablet... One is RAMBrandt.. It works with the CX-77, Koalapad, or Joystick.. And its probably the best/most full featured paint program (for standard atari graphics modes) ever made. Be sure and print out the docs though.. There are ALOT of features/tools/edit modes... It may even require 64k or a GTIA chip.. I dont remember.. But dude... heh. seriously.... get an 800XL or 130XE to run software on... and keep the 400 as a collectable.. Hope this helps... Bryan
I guess the Atari features the "Blue Screen of Life."
Mathy
Hello Bryan I guess the Atari features the "Blue Screen of Life." I guess Bill Gates is a closet fan of the Atari 8 bit. But he was afraid that if he put "READY" in it, (Tramiel) Atari would sue him. Greetings Mathy

Hope this helps... yeah, thanx it helps alot.I keep the 400 just for playing the awesome games it does have for it.Just want to verify if the thing works.Im not a techy at all, just a gamer.I just bought it cus it looked cool, and had no idea what it was,no one else at the store did either! But now i realise i really have no use for it.Plus its really not worth shelling out cash for hard to find software just to see if the damn thing works.I'll probably just toss it in the trash,(if its indeed a dud)I'll probably sell it to someone local who can test it,if its a dud, just give them their money back easily.Maybe ill just keep it as a collectable, but it would STILL be good to know it works! Rik
There isn't a screen, just the drawing surface. Thanx.I saw one thread here at AA that has the screen (drawing surface or whatever)on the cx-77 lit up like a pc monitor application would with graphical analysis of some sort on it.I figured the software displays on the cx-77.Guess it was just drawn really well, looked computer generated. Urchlay
Ok.. I apologize for being such a smart-ass.. But that was hilarious.. I gotta admit, I got a giggle out of it too. Plus its really not worth shelling out cash for hard to find software just to see if the damn thing works. Insert BASIC cartridge, at READY prompt type: 10 ? PADDLE(0), PADDLE(1) 20 GOTO 10 RUN Move the stylus (or your finger?) around on the pad, you should see the numbers changing. IIRC, the first number will get smaller as you move towards the left of the pad, and the 2nd gets smaller as you move towards the top... I may have that backwards, but anyway the numbers should change as you move on the pad.
