Cap5750
I received a copy of Solaris (red label) in a box of stuff I got recently. I've used several different systems (jrs, 4 switch, 6 switch, etc) and all of them have the game screen come up, but it is rolling in a fashion much like you'd see in the old days if your vertical hold was off. My first thought was that maybe the contacts were a little dirty so I took a small piece of sandpaper (I read about this somewhere) and gently went over the metal leads. No help. The only thing I can think of now is that maybe the cart is a PAL version? How would I know? Or that the cart is just bad. Thoughts? CosmicJoke
The only thing I can think of now is that maybe the cart is a PAL version? How would I know? It does sound like the behavior of a PAL cart on NTSC tv. Did any of the other carts in the same box exhibit this behavior?
Cap5750
Nope...just that one. Cap
StanJr
I'd say you have a PAL cart. Are the colors slightly off? I had this EXACT same problem, and Crossbow was nice enough to dissect mine and he did indeed discover it to be a PAL version in a normal looking cart. So from experience, I'd say you have a PAL. CosmicJoke
Humm? Is the picture on the label black and white or is it color?
Cap5750
Label is red...picture is black and white. Cap
CosmicJoke
Yes, I think Stan is right. Well, I think that is how the label on the North American version looks. It was probably a lack of quality control on the assembly line. I might have an extra NTSC version of Solaris I could trade to you if you need it I'll check out my extras sometime tonight. CrazyImpmon
I also got this PAL in NTSC bug. Some years ago, I found a number of 2600 games new at a dollar store. One of them was Solaris. But that game rolled even though all other games played fine.
MegaManFan
But I have one that rolls too, and I bought it in a $1 bin right here in the heart of America. Did Atari just louse up a whole print run of these or what?
CosmicJoke
It looks like a whole run of PAL Solaris carts were mislabeled as NTSC ones. I think Atari quality control was somewhat below par in the late 80's. I wonder exactly how may "messed up" Solaris carts were produced. I wonder if our PAL " brothers in Atari" got a bunch of NTSC carts?
Bez
I got a bunch of NTSC carts that work fine...except a copy of Buck Rogers, that is rolling.
Osmeroid
You've just gotta' see Dolphin on a PAL system! The ocean looks like it's made from blood My copy of Solaris has a colour label but it is PAL. For you guys in the US & Canada - do all PAL carts roll badly on NTSC systems? CrazyImpmon
When playing PAL games on NTSC TV, the picture rolls roughly 5-6 times per seconds. Adjusting the V-Hold may help but not all TV has the V-Hold these day. I also noticed the lack of color on PAL version of Solaris as well. StanJr
Mine is a red label with a faded B&W picture. And Cosmic Joke, would you be willing to trade straight up for the PAL Solaris or are you looking for something else? (If he doesn't want to trade you that is)
bcprs1
My NTSC solaris does the same thing. It would appear that this was a widespread problem with this game.
CrazyImpmon
Yes but red label Solaris with B&W picture do exists in NTSC form. I have 1, maybe 2 NTSC version along with 1 PAL Solaris. I did notice a difference: the NTSC version's end label is the same dull red as the main label but the PAL version the end label is a shade brighter and more red. I wonder if this is true for all other Solaris? I wonder how many mislabeled Solaris got returned and/or destroyed? I'd bet there's a million mislabeled Solaris buried in the landfill right on top of those ET carts.
MegaManFan
I just took my complete and boxed copy my wife purchased on eBay for my birthday out of the box and stuck it in my 2600 Jr. Just like my loose copy of the game, it rolls and rolls and rolls. Red box, red label. I'm beginning to wonder if ANY of the NTSC labelled Solaris were made right.
Cybergoth
Hi there! *bumped* I got a bunch of NTSC carts that work fine...except a copy of Buck Rogers, that is rolling. This is interesting. My copy of Buck Rogers has the screen jumping at random intervals during the surface scenes, so maybe it's NTSC too. But normally I have no problems with NTSC ROMs at all... Greetings, Manuel
Christophero Sly
I had a normal looking Solaris that rolled on my TV too. I didn't realize it was such a widespread phenomenon.
bjk7382
I have a solaris that rolls also. I got it from a friend because it "didn't work" and it doesn't work for me either.
