spiffyone
I was playing 7800 Donkey Kong last night and read the back of the box describing game. The 1st sentence states"You are Mario, the fearless carpenter".I thought wait a minute, isn't mario a Plumber?I guess he wanted a career change.Whats the story behind this one? In Donkey Kong, Mario was originally a carpenter. Actually, originally he wasn't even "Mario", but rather just called "Jumpman". Later releases changed his name to Mario. It wasn't until Mario Bros. (NOT Super Mario Bros., mind you) that Mario, along with his brother Luigi (I think that games was Luigi's first appearance, btw) were in the plumbing business. Maybe Mario was a carpenter at first, and then moved on to plumbing? Maybe he was a general handyman? Most likely he just worked a bunch of different jobs. I mean, honestly...he was a ref in Punch Out From there they somehow wound up in the Mushroom Kingdom, the setting of Super Mario Bros. Maybe the brothers fell into one of the pipes that somehow transported them to another world (ala that god-awful Super Mario Bros. The Movie movie). Or maybe they were always in the Mushroom Kingdom. Or maybe they just took one too many "magic mushrooms" and everything has been some warped drug induced fantasy.

MegaManFan
He's a handyman Jack-of-all-Trades really. It's hard to think of a job Mario HASN'T done (or sport he hasn't played).

I always wondered why he never falls over that huge prick in his games. Was that before or after his wrestling career? atomickneedrop
wow, its too bad they didn't go with the captain's voice (Lou albano) instead of that terrible voice they gave him in the later games. i definitely found myself questioning marios manhood after mario 64. Lou did a great job on the show. and the luigi guy was great, even if he was the 'used car salesman type' in many other tv shows. He's a handyman Jack-of-all-Trades really. Rik
Okay,so Mario is really a jack of all trades then.I was under the impression he was strictly a Plumber in the ongoing series of scenerios
MrBeefy
He tried to be a carpenter and failed, tried being a plumber with not much more success. Now he celebrates unemployment but eating '1-up' mushrooms and hallucinating far away kingdoms and mushrooms that talk and turtles that fly. I work with much of the same type of people. Luigi seems to be the level headed Brother getting a job with T.A.P.S.
