Tanman
Since I hooked up my 2600 for the first time in almost 20 years, I have now realized how bad Pac-Man was. Not sure if it is because it is soooo bad compared to the arcade version or if it is because it only uses two colors throughout the whole game, but even though it is over 2 decades later, the programers should be ashamed of themselves!!! moycon
the programers should be ashamed of themselves!!! It was the work of one person (Todd Frye) and yeah I don't think he liked it too much either. He wanted 8k of memory, Atari insisted on 4k and only gave him a few weeks to cash in on the Christmas season. I doubt he's ashamed though, he convinced Atari to give him royalties and the game made him a millionaire.
toiletunes
It's a much better game if you forget it's supposed to be pacman.

retrorussell
It's a much better game if you forget it's supposed to be pacman. Exactly. Keep this is mind, and it's hardly the worst game for the system. Not even close.
Dittohead Servbot #24
It's actually not a bad game IF you don't expect it to be like the arcade Pac Man.
+LS650
Actually I must admit that lately I have been playing a lot of Pacman2600. If this had been released under another name such as Mazeman or Munchman, most people would think it was okay.
SoulBlazer
Pac-Man is the worst game for the 2600, hands down. The arcade game could have been ported to the system MUCH better then it was. It was a rush job, sloppy done, and nothing at all like Pac-Man. We know Todd Frye was a better prorgamer then this -- the 4k vs 8k is part of the story, but I also think he was under a rush pressure to get it done and he knew it would sell like hotcakes and didn't care anyway. Even as a 6 year old kid, I knew how bad the game was.
BassGuitari
Pac-Man is the worst game for the 2600, hands down. Dude, what? I'll grant you that it's not the most literal of all arcade translations, and that [under different circumstances] it could have been done much better. But if you really can't find a worse game than Pac-Man on the Atari VCS, then you can't have played many games for it. Try Karate, Skeet Shoot, or Scuba Diver, and then tell me about the worst Atari game. Pac-Man is more like a Pac-Man clone than a Pac-Man port, but regardless, it's a pretty fun game, which is what it's all about. Even with the name "Pac-Man" it's a fun game.
GideonsDad
Pac-Man is NOT the worst game for the 2600. Take into account Mythicon's "3" games (all of which are the same) or Froggo's regurgitation of other companies bad games (Yes, I am a fan of Froggo for some weird reason). Or what about Sssnake or Airlock (both perpetrated by Data Age) or Squeeze Box (U.S. Games). Let's not forget the utterly stupid "porn" games from Mystique / Playaround. Pac-Man is better than all of the aforementioned games. I am sure there are many more worse games than Pac-Man for the 2600 considering the large library of games that exist for this system. If you want to play a better "Pac" game get a copy of Ms. Pac-Man, a vast improvement over Pac-Man. GideonsDad
Tempest
Congratulations! You get +1 "I wanna be popular" points for parroting mindless statements that have been argued ad nauseum for the last 15 years on every classic gaming board known to man. For the extra +5 bonus points please tell us how: A. E.T. caused the gaming crash B. Atari should have sold the NES when Nintendo offered it to them C. The Jaguar was (or was not) a 64-Bit system. + 2K Monies if you can work some C-64 or Amiga bashing into your argument. Tempest
DracIsBack
Pac-Man is the worst game for the 2600, hands down. However did you find time to play every one of the 1000 games on the 2600 to come to that conclusion? For the extra +5 bonus points please tell us how E.T. caused the gaming crash, how Atari should have sold the NES, or how the Jaguar was (or was not) a 64-Bit system. That made me laugh and laugh! SoulBlazer
I hope that wasn't aimed at me, Tempest. I have the highest respect for you and for your work on your site, and that felt like a cheap shot. The problem with the Pac-Man game is that it was CALLED Pac-Man. As others have noted, if it was sold as a clone game under a different name, I don't think the game would have been as bashed as it was. But when you name a game based on one of the most popular arcade games in history, people expect it to be almost as good as the arcade game. That was all I ment from my post. Pyromaniac605
Well unfortunately it couldn't be helped. There was only one person working on it over two weeks so that Atari could shoot it into the stores in time for the christmas rush. Even if they did have more time it would still be slow but the graphics (mazes and power pellets mostly) would have turned out alot better. Anyone know why the power pellets ended up as rectangles? it doesn't seem that it could be so hard to turn a rectangle into a square at least. -Darren-
Lonely Mountain Hermit
It's a much better game if you forget it's supposed to be pacman. Personally, I like to pretend it's supposed to be Mythicon's Firefly, then when I turn it on, I'm like, "Oh sweet Firefly, what a delight you are to behold!" +batari
Pac-Man may not be the worst, but it is certainly the most disappointing 2600 game I have ever owned. I was particularly upset when I read this in the manual: Our PAC-MAN has all of the excitement and challenge of the standard arcade game, and you get to play in the comfort and convenience of your own home. This is especially advantageous if you still plan to make an occasional appearance at the arcade to show off your great playing skills. (Little do they know that you've been practicing at home all along.)
atari181
Disappionting, absolutely, but the worst, no fucking way, I have play over 400 games for the Atari and their is at least 100 that are worse. Yes it was a bad port to the 2600, but worst ever no way. In the 83/84 era there was nothing but shit put out.

Christophero Sly
I tried pretending that it wasn't called "Pac-Man", and it still completely sucked! Its name is the least of its problems. Maybe not the ABSOLUTE worst game on the VCS, but close enough.
