Tickled_Pink's Blog - Unknown family ties

On Saturday we went to see my Aunt Mary. While there we started talking about some of the people we used to see regularly when I was a kid (up to the age of 10 or so). There were two people we used to visit. One was my Aunt Lena and the other was an Uncle Roy and his family. Both were farmers. I'd eventually grown up thinking that they were just family friends. However, after speaking to Mary it seemed that Lena was actually my Great Aunt (she's my grandmother's sister) and Roy was her brother, making him my Great Uncle.

 

This came as a huge surprise. We'd called Roy's kids 'cousins' but now, of course, I knew that they really were. The youngest daughter had been just a year or two ahead of me in school and yet she was Mary's and my dad's cousin ... in essence a generation ahead of me. She married an American and now lives in New Jersey (I met her, her husband and her two American kids about 10 years ago at a family get together for Great Aunt...
