atari_envy
For the first time since I have been collecting, eBay is returning over 10K items for a search on "Atari 2600". To put it in perspective about 5 years ago, I did the same search and had 1978 items returned, now it's 10,365. I remember the 1978 number because I had the thought, "One less item and the count matches the year of its release." The number has been climbing steadily and seems to have taken a jump with eBay's new policies for listing. Seems like we are seeing both a rise in the amount of supply and demand of Atari 2600 items. The net result seems to be driving the common stuff prices into the ground (for example .01 -.99 listings for loose commons) and raising the price of the more rare stuff. Just my 1/50th of a dollar. ianoid
Supply outstrips demand. eBay is becoming more popular, and people are 'mining' their basements and attics for more money. The economy is in recession and people who aren't working are seeking additional sources of income. I wouldn't strike it up to popularity alone. homerwannabee
Actually the reason that items are over 10,000 is because a few days ago Ebay did away with their Ebay store. So all those items that were in the Ebay store have flooded into the regular search engine. Over the past year the Atari 2600 items have been increasing because they came up with the 30 day buy it now auction. Some with Ebay stores decided it was better to go this route. So the drastic increase in Atari 2600 products is more of an illusion than reality.
atari_envy
Interesting. I forgot about the eBay store change, that would account for the good size bump of recent. However, I wouldn't completely discount what ianoid says. There has been a steady rise the past few years, and I am seeing a lot of new sellers enter the market. I guess the only real change is the fact that all your listings are now in General auction instead of a separate listing.
