RSS Bot Posted May 3, 2010 Share Posted May 3, 2010 I was reading an article on console hacking which seems to suggest Sony deliberately included OtherOS to eliminate the Linux incentive for hackers. In other words, hacking a console to run Linux typically also exposes ways to pirate games. Therefore, if the PS3 already ran Linux, the risk of piracy would be substantially reduced. (However, I've also heard that OtherOS qualified the PS3 for certain tax breaks as a "general purpose computer".) But, if we assume Sony did include Linux on the PS3 as an olive branch to the hacker community, does that mean that GeoHot broke the trust? I'd say yes, but it doesn't matter. GeoHot may have not been interested in piracy, but he certainly was going beyond the walled garden. However, I think that even if the Linux community respected Sony's boundaries there's no reason the pirate community would have not used OtherOS as an attack vector.
