Controller Conundrum

Sorry if this has already been posted... but-

 

is there a list of what (other system) controllers work with the 7800?

 

If I remember correctly, couldn't one use Sega Genesis controllers with the system.

Do an advanced search on 7800 controllers and you'll see this has been discussed before and quite recently. No, genesis controllers will not work without being modded. The 7800 controller is "special" that way and involves a couple of resistors soldered in parallel with the fire buttons.

Both Sega Genesis and SMS controllers will work with the Atari 7800 for all joystick games that are one button games. Any two button 7800 game does require an actual 7800 controller, or another one modified with the two resistors in parallel to work correctly.

Whoops, yes indeed - they work fine with the single button games - forgot to mention that. Assumed he was looking for 100% 7800 compliance. Thanks for clarifying Underball!

All Sega Genesis controllers work but not all the buttons will work.

 

I do remember somebody saying that it's possible for a game to use two of the buttons with the right programming.

They already do. There's a whole thread full of 2 button 2600 gme hacks that work with genesis gamepads.

I was talking about adding a third button. It's just adding that other button that needs that resistor to a Genesis controller might be a bit of a problem.
